I’m coming from the US to Thailand on a tourist visa. I’m moving to Thailand permanently other than a couple trips a year to visit family back in the US. I want to apply for a O visa after arriving in Thailand. I’m 63 years old but not collecting social security yet. My current employer wants me to work for them for at least the end of this year, maybe longer as part time while in Thailand. Can I still get an O visa? My salary will still cover the required 65,000 baht per month requirement. I know it says you can’t work but is that based on you can’t have a work permit to work in Thailand?
TLDR : Answer Summary
The O visa in Thailand, particularly for the NON-O category, is generally meant for retirees or those who wish to live in Thailand without working. While you can still receive a salary from your US employer, it typically requires evidence of sufficient funds either through bank transfers or banked assets. Since you are over 60 and considering applying for an O visa, you'll need to meet either the income requirement set forth by the Thai authorities or have sufficient funds (800,000 baht in your Thai bank account) seasoned for two months. It's important to note that engaging in work, even if it's for a foreign employer, may lead to complications regarding immigration status and tax obligations.
