Is there such a thing as a medical extension for a visitor from the US? I'm awaiting test results to see if I might need to have a surgical procedure done that, with recovery and follow-up, could run over both our 45-day visitor entry (expiring Nov 27) and the normal 30-day extension (would expire ~Dec 27).

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, there is a process for obtaining a medical extension for visitors in Thailand, but it requires documentation from your doctor. Medical extensions are typically granted for short durations to accommodate necessary medical procedures or recovery times. It's essential to coordinate with your doctor, who will need to provide supporting paperwork. After any surgery, you'll also need a 'fit to fly' sign-off from your doctor if you plan to leave Thailand.

There is a medical visa extension, but it must be coordinated with your doctor. After surgery it is a "fit to fly" sign-off by your doctor. Lots of surgeries don't preclude you from flying during recovery. Keep that in mind. Your doctor will not cheat either. If you are "fit to fly" then it is time to leave Thailand.

Take a border run for Christmas.

Your doctor will have to give you paperwork to support such an extension, and it's usually only given in small intervals just long enough to cover what is necessary. Immigration doesn't like giving these.
