TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, as a resident of Australia on the age pension, you can apply for a long-term retirement visa to Thailand while you are there for a holiday. It is advisable to apply for a NON-O visa online through your Thai embassy before traveling to facilitate easier access to a Thai bank account, which is needed to show the required funds. While it is possible to handle the application yourself, some may prefer to use an agent for assistance.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Get a non-imm 0 visa and you can apply for an extension while you are here and get the bank a/c while you are here. No need for an agent to do that: when applying for the extension just ask immigration to give you a letter to the bank which they will because needed for your application. Agents are for people without visa and no legal reason for a longer stay. I did the whole procedure (one false start -hadn’t done my homework properly) but now have the extension/permit to stay at the cost of Baht 1.900,- Plus the added cost of going back to Europe to restart the process. Chon Buri, might very well differ from other locations. Chock dee!

Absolutely. It will cost some $$ for an agent, but it’s straightforward, easy and doesn’t take much time as all.

fortunately I have the financial means to do anything I wish and don’t have to answer to anyone. Especially someone with one foot in the grave. Just pass already and let us young people have fun.

We did it in Jan 2023 - may have changed now, things often change in Thailand, but you may need an agent to help you open the bank account required.

You can, but you'll need to show 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account in your name only. You likely won't be able to open a bank account without already having a long-term visa.

It's better if you apply for the 90 day non-O visa online through your Thai embassy before you travel to Thailand. That visa should make it easier for you to open a Thai bank account which you can then deposit the money in and use for your first 1-year extension.

Thank you. My problem at the moment is that I was planning on doing the 800,000 tbht to avoid going the health insurance route. I'm part way through my visa application here in Australia and the embassy want a health insurance policy & certificate to prove the policy, these documents are mandatory on the EVisa site and won't let me progress any further. Pain in the butt

are you sure you applied for the correct visa? The 1 year non-OA requires health insurance, a criminal records check and a health certificate, the 90-day non-O doesn't require any of that.
