Can I apply for a DTV visa while on an ED visa with a re-entry permit?

Hi all!

I am currently on an ED visa but I am currently back in the UK (been back for 3 weeks).

I have a re-entry permit.

Over the last 3 weeks, i gained inheritance money, i have secured an online remote working job, which all ties in perfectly to apply for a workcation DTV.

I want to apply for the DTV as this would be perfect for me, but conscious I am on the ED visa still with a re-entry permit already paid for. I also already have my return ticket to thailand booked and i leave Aug 31 (not much time).

Am i able to apply for the DTV and cancel my ED visa once approved and then return to Thailand? I can start the application now but i only want to if i know i can cancel my ED visa once i get the DTV approved.

Any advice?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the user's situation regarding their current ED visa while being in the UK. They seek advice on whether they can apply for a DTV visa and subsequently cancel their ED visa upon approval. Responses from the community suggest that it is possible to apply for the DTV while on an ED visa, but caution is advised. Some recommend waiting until the user is back in Thailand to cancel the ED visa and apply to avoid overlapping visa issues. Others mention applying from nearby countries may offer a smoother process.

As others have said - wait until you are in region and apply. Look at the post from Friday in UK. Guy applied in London then flew to Thailand before DTV issued. They obviously saw this on their system. He had had to fly back to UK for application to be processed. A costly mistake.

The Immigration Bureau has cancelled nearly 10,000 stay permits after uncovering that many foreigners obtained student visas without attending classes.

Authorities say anyone failing to meet study requirements will have their visa revoked immediately. The move follows ongoing investigations into officials accused of facilitating fraudulent visas for foreigners linked to grey businesses.

How much time will it take Thai authorities to discover that all those ED visa abusers now applied for DTV and abuse that visa?

no idea. Right now, abuse of the DTV visa is a myth.... Until further notice.

My advice is to go back and finish your ed visa. Then go to one of the near by countries, maybe Vietnam or Indonesia, and apply for your dtv there.

That way you can max out your time in Thailand, your ed visa is finished and you won’t have any overlapping visa issues. You don’t have to cancel any flights and you have more time to prepare your documents for the application.

You need to physically go down to cancel your ed visa anyway so that requires you to go back.

Anonymous participant 861 if you apply for the DTV and pay the fee and then dont get approved for your DTV before your flight, you will have to change your flight at the last minute because you MUST wait in the country you apply for the DTV from until you get the approval. You cant be in Thialand whole waiting for the approval or you will be denied and lose your application fee.

Not enough time unless you can change your flight. The good thing about applying in the UK is your 500k doesn't need to season, if you come back to Asia and go to a nearby country to apply they're going to want to see it seasoned for at least 3 months.

Re-entry and cancel current ed visa and then apply DTV outside from TH.

I also was on an extension of an ED visa when I applied for the DTV. I was approved in 4 days and then went back to Thailand and cancelled my ED visa extension with no problems. It does take up a whole page in your passport which is annoying, but at least you don't have to worry about it in the future.

Anonymous participant 666 Good info that you can cancel the Ed after the DTV is issued. Some other visas the previous visa has to be cancelled first. I had this going from O to B.

I verified with my school before leaving the country that they had other students do the same thing successfully with a DTV just in case. There was a funny moment at immigration where the agent cancelling my extension said I had overstayed, because I was cancelling the visa extension after it would have expired, and I had to show her that I had actually left Thailand a week before the expiration date, and she could then see I had later re-entered on a DTV. She said "ohhh DTV" and then proceeded with the cancellation.

Are you on a visa or an extension of stay? Check your passport. If you're on an extension of stay you can apply and cancel the extension after you return to Thailand with documentation from your school. If you are actually on a visa you need to wait for it to expire
