TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is currently possible for Australians married to Thai nationals to travel to Thailand, but they must consult their local Thai embassy for specific requirements. Traveling also entails navigating quarantine measures, possible costs, and ensuring compliance with Australian exit regulations. Those with a Non-Immigrant O visa based on marriage are generally permitted entry, provided all documentation and procedures are followed.

I would suggest you Marshall your documents to show how much you are a vital necessity to the welfare of those in your family in Thailand.
thats the bit I'm not sure on. I'll let everybody know how I go.

hi John, i dont undertstand why people cant be nice on here. From what I see on the Canberra embassy site is that married have been able to return all this time - its the exemption from AUD that is the issue. I did notice end of September the exemptions now include more categories and retirees - so maybe the AUD GOV are becoming more reasonable.
It all depends if Australia will let you fly out. The Australian government have pretty strict need to fly restrictions in place at the moment. It would be no problem with the Thai embassy, once you get all the requirements, but the Australian government might not let you leave. That is the bigger problem.

I believe it's fine if you have a good reason (a wife living abroad would be one) and you promise not to come back to Australia any time soon. I have heard of others who got permission to leave, IIRC they had to say they were not going to return to Australia for a certain number of months.

I think the issue is the aussie govt wont let it’s (“free”) people out of the country.
my friend left Australia recently to return to live in the UK, she had to show a job offer in the UK or lease or property with her name on it there or shipping receipts showing that she was relocating with the contents of her home. She was given an exemption to leave Australia. Another friend was denied permission to leave to attend her father's funeral in the UK. I guess because she and her family would have been returning to Australia after a brief stay in the UK and could potentially bring Covid back with them
