A friend arrived visa exempt on a UK passport. Can he extend for 30 days at immigration on Koh Phangan? Thai embassy London seems to say he has to leave Thailand and come back, but a lot of information on their website seems to be out of date. Thank you for your help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK passport holder who arrived visa exempt can extend their stay for an additional 30 days at immigration on Koh Phangan. It's recommended to obtain a TM30 receipt with the local address. However, after this extension, they must exit Thailand.

Extend 30 days one time at immigration then must leave.

As a rule of thumb, Embassies/Consulates which are run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, know nothing about immigration matters, and immigration knows nothing about Foreign Affairs ministry matters.
