Hello all! If a kid has an ED visa, can he enroll in any local school (the ones where Thai kids go to)? Or are there any chosen schools meant for Ed visa holders?

Edited:

The kid already has an Ed visa, does he still need to get any special requirements (immigration stuff) or can he enroll based on what the school normally would require (i know they would ask for residence certificate).

My kid and I got our visa interchanged. So im thinking he can continue with the ed visa, im just not sure how it works for a kid.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, a child with an ED visa can enroll in any local school in Thailand, including public and private options. However, you must go through the Thai immigration office to apply for a yearly extension based on the child's school documentation. Although there are no special schools designated solely for ED visa holders, standard admission requirements, including a residence certificate, will still apply. It is also suggested to check if it's possible to reverse the visa situation if needed, as the parents initially intended to have the ED visa.

If your child has a 90 day single entry ED visa you'd need to take documentation from their school and go to the thai immigration office and apply for a yearly extension of stay based on your child attending school.

If you got a 90 day single entry Non-O visa, you'd need to take the correct documentation and proof of meeting the financial requirements (500K baht banked for 3 months) to get a yearly extension based on supporting a child in thailand.

Thanks a lot for the clarity, Tod.

Yes, yes. We will finish this visa. So no need for us to do any extension, right? We just go out of the country and get the right visas.

One more question, can we do the ed visa in KL or penang? Im bored with Vientiane.

You might as well get the 90 days out of this visa before going back for another one ;)

Yes, i submitted all the papers when we first applied for it.

Yes, I meant i will get the correct visa by going to the thai consulate and re-submit the requirements.

@Vict****
, You aren't gonna get the visa you hold corrected inside the country at an immigration office or outside the country at a consulate

In order to get an ED visa you'd take the paperwork from the school you enrolled in to a thai consulate and apply for a new ED visa.

Did you have paperwork from your school to support you getting an ED visa when you applied for the visas?

So with this, i guess it is better for me to get my own student visa corrected then. :)

Just a question, what thai consulate did you get those visas from?

I think that you actually got the right visas in the right passport. Your child (which I will assume is not thai) would hold an ED visa to go to school here and you as the supporting parent would hold an O visa to then qualify for the yearly extension based on supporting kids here (known as the dependent extension).

Hey tod. Thanks for your response.

I was the one who applied for the Ed visa. This is why i assume that they got our visas interchanged.

We did it in Vientiane.

I was told we need to re-do things in Vientiane for them to correct the visas.

But im thinking, (just like what you have said now) that maybe we can continue with this kind of visa. My kid can go to a school instead. So that we do not have to go back to Vientiane.

I think you are going to have to go to immigration and see if they will reverse the Visas back to where you have the ED and the child has the non O. It is possible you will have to go back to the Embassy/Consulate that issued them. I do no not see how you can proceed as the Visas are now done . An ED Visa for a child is not going to work

No - No special school -- what ever private school you can afford or a Thai public school where it is Thai Language immersion.

He is 5. I was supposed to be the one with Ed visa and him Non-O.

But the embassy got it interchanged. He got Ed, I got non-o. I didnt double check it before leaving the embassy in Laos. I thought it meant the same thing.

Your child - what age ? Has an ED Visa ? Please explain

Thanks for your response!

Maybe you can help more --- the kid already has an Ed visa, does he still need to get any special requirements (immigration stuff) or can he enroll based on what the school normally would require (i know they would ask for residence certificate).
