Hi I was wondering, if the requirements for extending a non immigrant O A visa for one year are the same as renewing the visa itself, wouldn't it be more beneficial to just renew the visa and effectively get two years out of it? Or am I missing something?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirements for extending a Non-Immigrant O-A visa for one year are different from those for renewing the visa. Extending the visa is done through the local Immigration Office in Thailand, while renewing or applying for a new visa must be done at a Thai Embassy outside of Thailand. Extensions can lead to a longer stay but might come with additional requirements, such as health insurance. It's also important to consider travel plans and the timing of applications.

So if when my permission to stay expires in January 2021 can I apply for a new O A visa here in Thailand? I am concerned that if I return to Oz I will not be able to return to Thailand. I know it's a while away but I want to be prepared. 😊

Ok is that a twelve month visa or do I extend it once I'm in Thailand?

The only visa that gives you one year of stay is the Non Immigrant O-A visa.

If you like to stay longer after the visa expired, you apply for an Extension of Stay at your local Immigration Office or

for a new visa at a Thai Consulate.

There are different options, you have to choice the best way that fits your needs.

So to convert from OA to O you can leave Thailand and get a 90 Tourist Visa and while here apply for Non Res O 90day Visa then 1 yr extensions based on Retirement correct?
Robert *******
@Mike ********
No, you leave Thailand, apply for a new Non Immigrant O visa based on being oer 50 years of age and return to Thailand.

@Robert ******
if you apply outside ,thailand isn't that the Non Res OA and requires Health Ins.? Inside Thailand it is Non Res O which does not require Health Ins at this time.

I got my Non Res O inside Thailand.

90 day Tourist Visa, while in Thailand got Non Res O. 90 day then got 1 yr extension based on Ŕetirement.

I think in easy steps, apply for the correct visa, go to Thailand and extend your stay,

Some people like to apply for the wrong visa, convert to the correct visa and then extend their stay. It works but it is more time consuming/

@Gary ******
. Just remember you cannot convert from an OA to an O in country.

Ok thanks, so an extension of stay looks like my best option if I remain here?
Lloyd ********
no, you can not get an OA inside Thailand

visas are not extended, you are talking about getting an extension of stay based on being over 50 (in country) as opposed to a non-imm OA which you get in your home country. yes, the OA if timed right will give you 2 years stay, but it comes with hefty health insurance requirements too.

@Lloyd *******
. If you get the OA in your own country you can use your own insurer in your country. But the insurance requirements in Thailand are not exactly "hefty". I can get a policy with no excess for about $22 Aus Dollars a week. That's small price to pay for a visa for which you never have to leave Thailand.

There are differences between the application for

1 year Extension of Stay inside Thailand at your local Immigration Office and application for

a new Visa at the Thai Embassy in your country of residence.

1 difference is travel distance.

Best is to get the hand out at your local immigration Office, check with the website of the Thai Embassy in your home country and see what fits your wishes the best
