What are the steps for transitioning from a non-B visa to a tourist visa after quitting a job in Thailand?

Hello. Currently on a non B visa that will be cancelled at the end of this month because I’ve quit my job. 

Am I right in thinking that the correct protocol is to leave Thailand (Malaysia) and come back on a tourist visa and then when I start my new job move onto a non B again?
