Will switching my son's visa from a non-O Retirement extension to a school visa affect my husband or I as dependents?

We are planning to switch our son from our non-O Retirement extension to a visa from his Intl. school. When we cancel him off the retirement visa, will this affect the visa holder (my husband) or me (another dependent)? We are Americans. I am also wondering if our son needs to leave the country to get the new visa; I haven't gotten many details from the school yet.
