Can I use an onward ticket dated after my extension for entry into Thailand under a visa exemption?

Hi. Great site. Planning to enter under a 45 day visa exemption and then extend for an additional 30 days. Does Thailand accept the onward air ticket date set within the extension period instead of within the 45 day exemption period? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand under a 45-day visa exemption, it is advisable to have your onward ticket dated before the end of the initial exemption period, even though extensions can be applied for. While some airlines might strictly enforce onward travel rules, passport control in Thailand is generally flexible with tourists, especially those who are not frequent entrants. It's often more important to check with your airline regarding their policies on onward tickets.

The airlines can let him fly but the immigration can refuse the entry..

The onward ticket should be before the extension period, however it's rare to face an issue..

Yes, you need both the airline to let you board, and the IO to let you through. But it's the airlines that ask you for proof of onward travel.

I arrived from KL before 2 weeks in Phuket on visa exemption.

Air Asia didn't ask me anything

However i was asked at the immigration when i am going to leave and i had booked ticket of exiting the Kingdom

Did you have a lot of visas and extensions in your passport?

Asking for proof of onward travel is one way IOs use to refuse entry to someone.

no

They asked me when i leave only

I told them before the end of 30 days

Ah, I had the opposite experience. Asked by the airline staff, not asked by immigration.

, that's airline who would have issue when you try to board without any legit visa to Thailand but attempt to enter Thailand on visa-exempt.

I think I understand: US passport holder (visa exempt) so this would be legit passport only entry as a tourist. Correct?

, You have right passport, but I meant by legit visa as a visa you purchase in advance to arrive Thailand, not entering on visa-exempt scheme without actual visa

The onward ticket 'conundrum' when entering visa exempt is more an issue with your air carrier than with passport control once you land here

SOME air carriers require you to have onward travel within the number of days you will stamp in for (and MANY air carriers do not know that the visa exempt entry stamps will go to 45 days on Oct 1st so are still saying you need onward travel within 30 days)

Passport control here is highly unlikely to ask "regular tourists" <- as in people who haven't lived here for 2+ years on amnesty and covid extensions for proof of onward travel when you stamp in AND they know you can get a 30 day extension so are pretty flexible with the onward travel date as well
