Hello, a friend of mine is asking about needing proof of a flight out of Thailand for a 30 day exemption ... I have never had to do this. He is flying from Australia to Bangkok. Any advice? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
For travelers arriving in Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption, the requirement for proof of onward travel can vary. While it is generally unlikely that customs will ask for this proof upon arrival, it is more common for airlines to request it during check-in, especially if the passenger does not hold a visa. Some travelers suggest purchasing a ticket with a free cancellation option to meet the airline's requirements without committing to the trip. There’s consensus that those without a history of repeated visa-exempt entries are less likely to be questioned about this upon arrival.
as people said IF they don't have a history of living here on back-2-back visa exempt entries or tourist visa entries they're not gonna be asked for ANYTHING when they stamp into the country.
AND
IF they are asked for anything they'd be asked for proof of funds (20K baht or the equivalent in CASH) before proof of onward travel.
They have a far higher chance of being asked for proof of onward travel when they check in for their flight with the air carrier coming here without a visa in their passport on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp than they do being questioned by passport control once they're here.
