Hi, I had a retirement visa the expired May 24, I had to leave Thailand and go back to the US due to a death in the family. I'll have to get a new retirement visa when I come back. My family bought me a 1 way ticket to Bangkok. Do I have to show proof of onward travel? I'll get 30 days plus 30?

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring whether they need to provide proof of onward travel when arriving in Thailand with a one-way ticket after their retirement visa expired. Comments confirm that while 30 days of stay plus a possible extension is allowed for visa-exempt entry, there may be a requirement to show an onward ticket, particularly from the airline's perspective.

If you are planning to enter Thailand on visa-exempt, you will be stamped for 30 days upon entry. Visa-exempt entry is eligible for one 30 days tourism extension. So, yes you will be able to stay in Thailand 30 +30 days.

If you need an onward travel ticket when you enter Thailand? Based on the rule, yes, though not being asked that often.

But if your airline let you board or not without a visa or outbound ticket is a different story. It's more like an air carrier you would have a problem with when you are trying to travel without an outbound ticket and intending to enter Thailand on visa-exempt. You need to check with your air carrier about that.

would a bus ticket to Laos be ok?

, You need to check with your airline. Some accept international land travel tickets, but there are a few airlines that only accept air tickets.

Should be okay as long as it's actually into Laos and not to a border city in Thailand with intention of walking across the border.
