AIS also works anywhere in the world (you have to enable it BEFORE you leave Thailand). My prepaid AIS sim has full signal right now in Europe ;)

Go to a Lao phone shop that actually issues a Lao SIM (not to a shop that has to run down the street and get a SIM for you at double the price). An issuing shop will charge you the equivalent of 40 baht for a SIM with Internet access. However with heavy use it may only last 24 hours.

If you are just over the other side of the river then yes. If no signal just head towards the river

No - but if your close to the Thai border (near the Mekong river in Vientiane) you will get Thai service 😉😎

Yes, it will. Contact True to activate international roaming if it isn't activated. I think they do daily packages from ฿99. (Depending on country)

Concur... my AIS worked near the river, for a one night stay not worth getting a Lao card.

It's spotty and sometimes you hafta make it look for the connection, but I got mine to work in Vientiane most of the time.
