Just had a message saying my UK 3G phone will soon be 'switched off '. I need a UK number for banking, and don't want to fly back just to buy a new one. Anyone had a similar problem before? Wondering if I can buy one here and swap sim! Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user in Thailand is seeking advice on how to retain a UK phone number for banking purposes after receiving a notice about their 3G phone being switched off. The community suggests various options such as using virtual SIMs, acquiring a UK SIM card through online platforms, and recommending local SIM services like Expatfone and Swytch. Several comments emphasize checking whether current SIMs are compatible with 4G/5G networks and share the importance of keeping a number active through periodic top-ups or usage. Alternatives like eSIMs and getting someone in the UK to activate a SIM for mailing are also discussed.
Take a look at Expatfone.. which works through a proprietary app' called 'Devyce'.. it allows you to port your Uk mobile number into what is effectively a virtual (VoIP) network.. so you don't have to change your number.. you get free inward and outward calls and texts to all standard Uk landlines and mobiles.. and a free voicemail service built in.. it makes and receives calls as if you were still in the Uk.. so it doesn't alert the person you are calling to the fact that you are overseas.. similarly, people calling you don't get an abnormal (ie. overseas) ringtone.. so it's great for maintaining anonymity with people that don't need to know your location.. particularly useful if your Uk bank is targetting customers who reside overseas for account closure.. and will allow you to receive the codes for all those apps that have 2-factor authorisation security protocols (like your bank) without any hassle.. there's a fixed monthly subscription after a trial period.. and that may be discounted for the first few months.. I've found it to be a simple and reliable solution.
Ps. You don't need to be in the UK to port your number.. it's all done via their website.. and since there's no physical sim there's nothing to mail to you 👍
1p mobile works well in Thailand, £40 a year, all manageable online, order a SIM card to be sent to a friend or relative in the UK, get them to activate the SIM, and send it to you in the post.
Why do you need a uk number ? It doesnt affect anything. Just leave your old number as contact number and add a 2nd number via online banking being your thai number.
Depending on the maker model of your phone, you should be able to ask your network to swap it for an E sim. Which is a virtual sim built into phones so you are simply swapping your number to become an E-sim .This is what I did with mine no need to visit in my case. EE shop.
You could try contacting your UK provider and ask them to change to eSIM. Of course your phone needs to support it. Only because 3G isn’t working in the UK anymore doesn’t mean you can’t connect to thai providers. I switched before i left and for various reasons required a new eSIM from my swiss provider. They give you the necessary information to activate it
Hi, just checked on MoneySavingExpert and it seems my phone does support 4G! Phone itself doesn't say it, just keep fingers crossed it will work I guess. Thanks for your help Cheers
Hi, thanks for your comments. I've got a Samsung A21, with a GiffGaff sim..... bought in UK 2021. Phone only shows LTE/3G/2G when checking compatibility with 4G/5G
BrilliantShark3683 FYI- LTE and 4G are the same thing. They are telling you that the old signal standard of 3G is going away. If your current phone has LTE you are all good. My advice would be to simply contact your phone company to verify that your exact model is still supported. If yes = All Good. If No = Make sure they are not trying to upsell you to a new phone for no reason like they did to us Americans years back. If they still need you to change anything then come back here. :- ) I hope this helps helps -I'm an old IT tech and every family member and friend came to me thinking they were getting disconnected.
Invites scrutiny.. many UK banks are flagging expat accounts and unless you are a 'very good' customer they are targetting them for closure.. I'd never alert my UK bank to my overseas residence through an address or mobile phone update to reflect Thailand!
I use both fine and have for the last 10 years this way, never an issue. I even went into the bank so they are aware I'm over here most of the year so there are no issues when using my card.
3G cell is being switched off. 4G and 5G will continue. How old is your SIM card as it should still roam for OTPs. You can get UK SIMs on Shopee. You can get a virtual UK mob number called More Mins that renews once a year. All UK networks are retiring 3G to use the bandwidth. 2G also but slower as the UK smart meters use 2G for data sending.
