Long story short. I applied for a K1 visa iin early December of 2022, after visiting my Thai girlfriend for two weeks in early November, 2022. Does anyone know if USCIS will fail her interview because of lack of basic English? Her son is going to accompany her to help with translation when USCIS schedules her interview in the coming months. P.S. I know she will need to know basic English in order to become a U.S. citizen but it is necessary for passing the USCIS interview?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is concerned whether their Thai girlfriend, who lacks basic English skills, will face difficulties during her K1 visa interview. They mention that her son will accompany her to help with translation. Comments provide insights that while her English skills are not the main focus of the visa interview, having documentation of their relationship is crucial. Some users note that English proficiency becomes more significant for future immigration steps, especially for obtaining a U.S. citizenship.

Thank you Steve! Lily lives in Chiang Mai. Will she have to travel to Bangkok for the USCIS interview? So, Lily won't need to know English to pass the USCIS interview for a visa? Once she is in the USA, she will be working at a restaurant with several Thai workers that know a little English so hopefully she will learn enough to pass her citizenship after a few years. One last question. When Lily is sent her letter to go to the interview, do you think it will help if I fly back to Chaing Mai to accompany her, along with her son that knows basic English? Thank you in advance!

Her interview will be at the embassy in Thailand to get the visa.

I did this (quite a while back, 2015) and in BKK to get the visa was a breeze. She was offered to answer questions in Thai but she chose English to show she understood.

However, once in Hawaii and we were converting her K1 to her green card (after marriage) that was strictly English and not too friendly.

I would also say for citizenship it should hr better than basic. They asked her quite a few questions on several topics including my work, family, kids, and previous career. It also includes a written and oral test. When we were there I was in the waiting room during her interview and I saw two people that were rejected because their English wasn’t good enough.
