TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is seeking advice about the impact of a 17-year-old drink driving conviction in the UK on their visa application for retirement in Thailand. There are discussions regarding the necessity of police checks for specific visa types, with some commenters suggesting that a Non-Immigrant O visa may be easier as it doesn't require a police check unless seeking an O-A visa. The conversation also touches on the visibility of past convictions and overall advice for applying in Thailand versus the UK.

Nothing to worry about.

Your first step is to apply for a basic disclosure to disclosure Scotland and see what's on there. There is no point discussing this until you know that.

Yes there is the Rehabilitation of Offenders act, but Ian Huntley effectively ended that.

If something is on there that is not necessarily the end, it may be that you would be able to apply to the cheif constable to have it removed but of course you'd be best advised contacting a specialist lawyer about that, and that means a city centre large firm.

First job is to apply for the form, the system is fantastic these days, cheap and fast, as many people need to apply for all manner of jobs. There is a monumental fudge at work because Scotland has a completely separate and more lenient legal system. Good luck

The police check is only needed for the Non Immigrant O-A visa. If you're not sure about this police check apply for the Non Immigrant O visa which gives you 90 days of stay when you have single entry or multiple times 90 days when multiple entry. You can extend your stay with application of 1 year Extension at local Immigration office also no police record required.

Then you know it never go's away. It's always there that you went to prison.
Ron *******
You do know what a PNC check is?
Ron *******
Ok. The government website is wrong.
Ron *******
The prison sentence record never go's away. Only the conviction.
Ron *******
Unfortunately although the conviction is spent, the fact you went to prison is ALWAYS on the police computer and will always show in a PNC check until you are 100 years old.

Good link here for info

@Jeff ********
are you sure a drink and drive conviction 17 years ago will be visible on your criminal record today?

Koont Bush Andrews it happened outside of London and got picked up on my background check in USA for a job. Didn’t affect me getting the job but it was on records.

No not sure but i wondered because certain agencies in the Uk have access even to spent convictions for eg those with the welfare of children under their control
Roger *******
Tod or Robert better answere that for you.

But i also wonder is it easier to apply here in Thailand obviously meeting the financial criteria
Roger *******
I googled it and in Sweden after being caught drink and driving and you got a fine it would be visible on your criminal record for 5 years, if you went to prison it would be visible for 10 years.

I believe if you apply for one in home country it will be good for 2 years if you leave and re-enter country at right time .. wish I knew that before

Cheers John but would it be easier here in Thailand or at home just considering options at the moment
