Will my mom need to check in at the counters for her international flight after a domestic flight in Thailand?

Hello! My mom and I booked a domestic flight from Phuket to BKK, then she has a separate international flight to go back to her country. She's not checking a bag, so will she need to check in at the counters in front and go back through security? Or can she just go to her gate? How much time do you think she needs?

I'm asking all this because the domestic airline changed our flight from HKT to a later one and now there is only 1.5 hours between flights. I've already contacted the airline about switching to an earlier flight and I'm waiting to hear back.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about their mom's connection at BKK after a domestic flight from Phuket to Bangkok (BKK). Since there is only 1.5 hours between flights, the user inquires whether she can go directly to her gate or if she must check in and go through security again. Community members advise that she will likely need to go through passport control and security again, even if she isn't checking a bag. If she checks in online and has her boarding pass, it may expedite the process, but timing can be tight depending on airport busyness.

She'll need to get from domestic arrivals to international departures, check in, clear security and immigration then get to the departure gate. It all depends how busy it is, but I'd say you're cutting it fine!

I had an hour and 30 minutes to depart exit immigration and catch my flight . Strange thing was the same plane I got off was the plane to take me to Cambodia . I checked in at the counter but missed the flight . Had to buy a new ticket for the next day . When I booked I had 2.5 hours , but they moved the departure time .

Yikes, so it sounds like you had the same thing happen. Were you checking any bags?

I made through immigration got stamped out . By the time we got to the gate they had closed the doors . Air Asia agent walked us back to immigration and cancelled our exit . Royal pain I'm the rear . And an extra 300 dollars for new flight plus one night hotel . We did not waste any time after getting off our first flight it just couldn't be done .

No no bags .

If you check in on-line and print your boarding pass, you can bypass the check-in counters and go straight to security/immigration (have done it personally).

Depends on which country you're flying to, as the check-in counters will need to see your passport to ensure you have the necessary visa and/or credentials to enter the country of destination

That's part of the online check in process - if your passport/visa needs verification then you cannot complete the process and are directed to report to the check in counter. As she is returning to her home country, she should have no issues completing the online check in and accessing her boarding pass.

"should have no issues" being the key phrase. Without knowing her full situation it's not possible to be 100%. She can try of course, and if it works it's all good. Very often people live in different countries to that of their nationality

Which airlines is she flying with? There may be an interline partnership

we're coming in on Vietjet and she's leaving on Korean/Delta.

I don't think there's any way to bypass the normal check-in counters. With through flights there is a separate transfer area, which saves having to join the hordes but I don't believe VietJet have any such arrangements

Yes because she'll also need to go through passport control to get stamped out of the country. If she doesn't have a bag to check and can just checkin with a kiosk she should have time.
