TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about traveling to Laos while awaiting approval for a retirement visa extension and whether it would impact their application. The comments provided various opinions, primarily advising to obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand to avoid issues with the visa application. Several commenters suggested it is possible to leave Thailand temporarily with the appropriate permits, while some advised staying in Thailand until the visa is approved. The consensus leaned toward ensuring proper documentation and being cautious about the timing of travel.

Simple answer is yes

Go to local immigration and ask for single or multiple re-entry

If you plan on doing multiple dealings with the local immigration in the near future (think 1yr extension) best grease the wheels a little for a smooth transaction

Be polite and friendly, buy coffees, never lose your temper etc etc

Yes your extension will be null and void @ ANONOMOUS

oh your not the op. When you leave with a visa or extending pending the immigration IT Systems automatically cancels it

@Phil *****
But he has not applied for extension. He is waiting for the money to be seasoned before he applies
Phil ******
@Marianne *******
still can't leave thats the rule

@Phil *****
lol, no.

He can leave just fine. There is no application in process.

He needs a re-entry permit and return in time to actually apply for his extension of stay.

That is all.

Get a re-entry permit before leaving.

We were planning on going via land crossing at nong khai is it possible to get re-enry permit there.

Newfarang 57 you cannot buy a single re-entry permit directly at the Nong Khai border crossing (Friendship Bridge) when leaving Thailand; you must get it beforehand from a Thai Immigration Office, or at an international airport before departure, as land border checkpoints don't sell them. A single re-entry permit costs 1,000 Baht and allows one trip out and back, but it must be obtained in advance of your intended departure.

Newfarang 57 This one I don't know, but your local Immigration office will sell you this, I'm sure.

If I was you stay put until you get your visa plenty of time to travel afterwards

Get a re entry permit no problem.....I have travel out of thailand during my 90days nonO with a single re entry permit and come back in time for the 1yr extension....its advise to get a multiple re entry permit after your 1yr extension if you are traveling often
Bob **********
You’ll need a re entry permit and a thick wallet if your taking a girl and her friend good luck
Gregory *********
following. I think you can get a re-entry visa and go and return within the 90 days. But havent seen anyone do it.
Greg ***********
@Gregory ********
there is nothing such as a "re-entry visa" for his 90 days stay permit. . . . the Non-Imm-O visa already expired when he entered Thailand on it. He is on a 90-days stay permit. For this stay permit he can buy a re-entry permit. He needs to be back before the 90-days stay permit expires

@Greg **********
immigration at Kalasin said I could get a single or multiple added to my 90 day initial entry while I wait for my bank account to mature
Greg ***********
@Todd ********
a multiple re-entry permit for 3800 Baht would only make sense if you plan to exit and re-enter more often than three times within those 90 days

@Greg **********
just giving options, what can I say

@Todd ********
better don't say anything 😂

great to hear. Permits and visas are the same to me.

A "visa" permits and regulates the ENTRY into the country.

Depending on the visa category, you will receive different lengths of stay permits. For Thailand, these can be 15, 30, 60, 90, or 180 days. They can also be 5, 10, or even 20 years.

The STAY PERMIT regulates STAYING in the country.

The duration of the permitted stay depends on the visa category with which you entered.

A single-entry visa becomes invalid upon entry and cannot be extended or used for another entry.

You have entered the country “on a visa” and you are now inside the country on a stay permit. This is also evident from the entry stamp:

This stamp states "admitted until" and a date. This stamp is the actual stay permit. This stamp is not a visa. The entry date is in red, and the expiration date of the "admitted until" permit is in blue.

In the upper right corner, next to the wording “visa class”, the visa category under which you entered the country is either handwritten or stamped.

If you leave the country before the expiration of your stay permit without a re-entry permit, the visa itself does not expire (because you no longer have any visa)... it is just the stay permit that will expire.

The "extension of the stay permit" is not a visa.

It is an “extended stay permit”.

No immigration office can extend any visas; technically, that's impossible, even though they often refer to a "visa extension" in their terribly bad English

Unfortunately, immigration doesn't differentiate between the terms "visa" and "stay permit." They consider them one and the same. This is not correct.

However, a handful of immigration offices have seen the light and stopped talking about "visa extensions." See the image below the comment!

I need absolute clarity in my visa consultations, I ignore the immigration office's error and will always use the correct terminology.

Lack of words also plays a role. It's easier to say “you have a retirement visa" than to use the correct term, "you got a one-year extension of the temporary stay permit based on retirement."

If you don’t understand this, I really can't help. Then all my efforts are in vain and you need to get educated.

Don't leave thailand...until after you have received the appropriate visa

@Bob *******
he has an appropriate visa. He has a non-O visa. All he has to do is get a re-entry permit and re-enter the country before the visa expires.

@Wayne *******
the Non-Imm-O visa already expired when he entered Thailand on it. He is on a 90-days stay permit. For this stay permit he can buy a re-entry permit. He needs to be back before the 90-days stay permit expires

@Bob *******
He can leave with a re-entry permit no problem.

As long as he returns before his stay expires he can move along with the application to extend his stay with his then seasoned money.
Marianne ********
You are currently on a 90 day stay granted when entering with a Non-O for retirement?

Just get a re-entry permit before you go.
