Will extending my tourist visa in Thailand affect my DTV visa application?

Hey everyone. I started saving toward the 500,000 THB requirement for the DTV visa last month, but I had to dip into it after my dog went missing for a few days. Thankfully, he was found safe, but I was abroad at the time, so the situation became unexpectedly expensive.

I am still relocating to Thailand with my remote work, but I will not have the full 500,000 THB until January, and from what I understand, the funds need to be maintained for 3 months+.

As a US citizen, my plan is to enter Bangkok on a tourist visa first. I originally planned to leave in February to apply for the DTV visa in Indonesia, but I am now considering extending my stay instead due to the timing of reaching the 500,000 THB. Based on my understanding, I can extend a 60 day tourist visa by 30 days, but would that reduce my chances of DTV approval later?

Would appreciate any suggestions. I know the process is becoming stricter, and I want to maximize my chances, especially since traveling means placing my dog in a hotel while I am abroad. Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat relocating to Thailand seeks guidance on whether extending a 60-day tourist visa by 30 days will negatively impact his chances of being approved for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). He currently lacks the full required funds of 500,000 THB, which he plans to have by January, and is concerned about the stricter visa application processes. Responses indicate that extending the tourist visa should not affect the DTV application and emphasize that maintaining sufficient funds is necessary for entry and visa approval.

You might very well be required to present the evidence of sufficient funds each time you enter the country ! Be aware of the fact they can (and sometimes do) ask to show proof you got that half mil at all times

Be aware that remote work from Thailand without a workation DTV is not strictly legal so keep your head down

Thanks everyone! I have decided to go with the standard 60 day tourist visa, probably stay around 50 days, and aim to have 20k+ usd by February to strengthen my chances of approval in Indonesia. I have never been there so I am planning to go straight to Bali and submit the e-visa from there. Thanks again!

I applied and was approved in Japan and the Thai Embassy in Tokyo only needed to see my current bank balance, not 3 months leading up to it.

As for your question, if you decide to stay the 90 days as a visa exempt tourist before applying for the DTV, this will not affect your DTV application at all. Just make sure you're out of Thailand during the entire application process. Good luck

Your 30-day extension of a Visa exempt entry stamp will have Zero effect on your DTV application

Depending on where you apply you do not need the 500k seasoned for 3 months.

May I ask which country applies the approval with less than 3 months? might still extend just to be safe but would prefer going to a country that is little more flexible. Thank you!!

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur likes a lot of docs and it took over 3 weeks. So I do not advise to go there just informing.

But... The accepted my 14 days old certificate from bank that I have X amount on the bank account, not even statement.

Thanks for the heads up! I am currently looking at Indonesia (Jakarta) right now based on my own research and hoping that spending 7–10 days there, after staying 60–90 days in Thailand, will allow me to get an approval for the DTV visa next year. πŸ™

don't plan on a set timing to get DTV. You will get it when you get it. Have open end ticket if you can't fly in on a one way ticket. There is no predicting how long a consulate will take to process

I planned to go to HCMC based on what another member has done. He went to the embassy and got his DVT in 8 days, but he did not reply to my message as to whether he had 3 months showing $15k in his bank. Based on how he obtained his DTV in HCMC, I suspect he did. My plan is to stay in HCMC for 2 weeks and head to BKK -- hopefully with my DTV. You looked into Indonesia, Jakarta. Is it better to obtain my DTV there? What are the costs there? The same $15k? Please advise. Thanks.

From my last comment, I decided to move forward with the $20k plan and go to Indonesia, since it’s the only country on the list from Andi that I haven’t visited yet. Based on other expat community groups, Vietnam and Indonesia also come up very often so I just picked the country I never been. Best wishes!!

Do you mean the "multiple entry tourist visa" or the visa waiver (60days + 1 extension of 30)?

From the info I'm going off, they will look at your history over the past year or so: have you been in and out of Thailand multiple times? Border runs, overstays, etc etc

If not you should be good to apply for the DTV even after completing the 60+30 on a visa waiver.
