TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a 1-year Multiple Entry Non-Immigrant B visa, your passport must be valid for at least 18 months. If your passport expires before the visa's one-year validity, you should renew your passport timely to ensure compliance with immigration rules. It is also possible to keep your old passport when applying for an extension on a new one.

To get the full year of the Extensions of Stay your passport has to be valid for at least a year. If less than a year you only get Extension of Stay till the last day of passport.

@William *******
nope, on an extension of stay you just need your passport to be valid for a year (as long as the extension really).

If it's not they will only give you an extension for as long as your passport is valid.

extension of stay

The big question is what do you mean with visa ... retirement? Is this Non Immigrant O visa or an Extension of Stay?
Robert *******
You only get the 1 year Multiple Entry Non Immigrant B visa IF your passport is valid for at least 18 months.
