Why was I charged a fee for an international transfer to my K-bank account?

Hi all. I recently made an international transfer to my K-bank account. It was shown as a "bahtnet deposit" with THB100 deducted from the transferred amount.

This seems odd as I made a similar transfer just last month and it was received as a "transfer deposit" with the remarks on the transfer channel being "internet/mobile across bank". No fees were deducted.

According to aseannow web forum, it seems that K-bank have only recently started charging and switched to bahtnet. Anyone have similar experience?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user queries about being charged a fee for an international transfer to their K-bank account, which was processed as a 'bahtnet deposit'. In contrast, a previous transfer was received without fees as a 'transfer deposit'. Commenters discuss their experiences with transfer fees among different banks in Thailand, noting that some banks charge for incoming wire transfers while others do not, and clarify that 'bahtnet' generally indicates a domestic transfer.

BAHTNET (Bank of Thailand Automated High-value Transfer Network) is the real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system of the Central Bank of Thailand. It enables the instant and final settlement of payments in Thai baht between banks and other institutions holding an account with the Bank of Thailand (BOT).

Bahtnet implies an in country transfer not an international transfer

Same for me. When I transfer from my Norwegian Bank to Kasikorn Bank, it is listed as Bahtnet Deposit. The question is, do the Immigration accept this as a International transfer ?

@Tore *******
I wouldn't have thought so as its a system for banks registered with the bank of Thailand. How are you transferring?

I transfer from a normal Norwegian bank account to my Kasikorn Bank. I have been told that first the money goes to Chartered Bank in Thailand and then they transfer to Kasikorn Bank…

@Tore *******
that will be why it shows as bahtnet. It is not an international transfer coming into Kasikorn. I don't think that is acceptable to immigration so you would need to chase Chartered Bank to get proof of International transfers

That's a good question!

On the bahtnet transfer as shown in my K-bank mobile app, it does not provide any info on who was the transferor. I guess this would require going to bank itself to ask if they can provide documentary proof that this particular incoming transfer originated from overseas and from whom, so that it would be acceptable to thai immigration.

Thanks for this fee info.

Any idea if this bahtnet process was just recently implemented by K-bank?

Because last month I had made a similar transfer from the same transferring bank to K-bank and it did not get processed and deposited through bahtnet.

bahtnet is the Thai bank clearance house like a government reserve bank but a private bank. Sometimes my Wise transfers to Bangkok showed bahtnet not IFT

Bangkok bank also charges a fee with Bahtnet.

if you use Wise Bangkok Bank will not charge you.

Not if you are using a forex broker and getting a better rate than Wise.

I transferred yesterday from UK to Kasikorn with Wise. No fees charged by Kasikorn ( and never have been)

Wise will ask the reason for the transfer as part of the procedure. For those of us who live here, we just click ' funds for long term stay in Thailand. I'll check my bank statement as to what they actually write for the deposit amount from Wise ( although I'm pretty sure it doesn't mention wise). Ok. - It shows as 'Trade Finance Deposit' - with a reference number, that's all.

I've been using direct bank to bank transfer (via bank TT SWIFT method) for a couple years now without problem, with no fees charged at the K-bank end. It is only this recent transfer that it was changed to being a bahtnet deposit into my K-bank account.

I may have to consider changing to Wise. Can I ask how the Wise deposit is remarked in the transfer channel" on the K-bank transaction info/statement? I.e. is it "internet/across bank" with supplementary details on the transferor bank.

@Paul *****
do you transfer from your UK account to Wise then to Thai account. Thanks

@Nancy *****
it's all done by Wise themselves. I don't have a wise bank account like some people have. Wise redirects you to your UK bank website to authorize the transaction.Just go on the wise website, tell them you want to make a transfer to Thailand and which UK bank they can take the money from (acc. No etc) and you automatically get taken to your bank online site to authorize Wise. Once the transaction is authorized it takes around 6 seconds to get to your Thai bank account ( really). I've used them for years.

@Paul *****
