Why is the TM30 required for visa extensions in Thailand?

Why is everyone getting the TM30 for their visa extension?

After booking a meeting with immigration they don't specify the document in their requirements (screenshot attached) and have not requested it last time I renewed my extension.

It's clearly a requirement for the Koh Samui, but MTT in BKK hasn't requested it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The TM30 form, which documents where foreigners are residing in Thailand, has become a contentious topic among expats seeking visa extensions. Some immigration offices, such as the MTT in Bangkok, do not consistently ask for this document during the visa extension process, while others, particularly in regions like Koh Samui, appear to enforce its necessity more strictly. Many community members advise bringing the TM30 just in case, as failures to register can lead to fines or complications during the visa application. Despite inconsistent enforcement, being prepared with all necessary documentation, including TM30, is recommended to avoid unnecessary risks.

Yes they did. I was there this morning, Bangkok. Both me and my wife had to produce TM30 proof else they would not proceed. Others have not been asked. But if you get unlucky and are asked, but do not have it, you will have wasted your time going. Better to be prepared with it, and bonus if they don't request it. πŸ˜‰

, and Ladies and Gents, I was able to get all the necessary documents. I'm even bringing extra documentation for any potential outcome/questions for tomorrows meeting. Thanks for all the help!

I was at MTT today afternoon. I didnt have any TM30 with me nor the officer asked me one. I finished less than an hour. Told to come back exactly after 2 weeks to close the under consideration stamp. No questions asked during my turn.

My landlord refused to provide the TM30 or to help with the process. I only have the receipt and rental agreement. Any advice? I saw you can self register online, but I'm also getting a duplicate error. No luck :-) My plan is to print all these documents and the conversation with the landlord to see how it goes.

Analog Hostel is also a good one for TM30 and has good reviews

You may be able to file with the lease. I tried but my lease from airbnb for 3 months wasn't up to their standards to let me do a tm 30 filling. You may find it easier to book a hotel for a few days.... Also you need the tm 30 in place for mtt. You didn't used to but this time around you do.

thanks for the info. Do you know the process with a hotel? Can I just book a room for a couple days and they will provide the TM30 on the spot? My appointment is Friday so I would have the time tomorrow to book a cheap hotel.

@Olivier *******
some hotels don't do a good job of filling. I know for sure the LA 49 hotel files correctly because it was the only one showing up in the computer system for me since april...

Thanks for the hotel name. LA 49 looks pretty nice. But an expensive additional tax.

Do you have any insights on the minimum stay requirement - how many days should be booked at minimum?

Just a quick question... I’m travelling around so not renting monthly anywhere. I’m going to Trang immigration on Thursday and will be staying at a hotel there. They should register my TM30 right? And I should just print out my hotel receipt?
Sarah ************
Just an update. Went to Satun today. Received the under consideration stamp. Only had to fill out the covid form, give passport copies and picture. No TM30 or embassy letter πŸ™‚

I was in MTT today, they check in the system of my TM30, I did not file it, fine 800 baht and got it into the system. I have a property here tho.

I see a foreigner rejected by officer, as he stayed in a hotel. I’m not sure if the hotel file it for him, but officer ask proof of payment for the hotel stay, like bank transfer, credit card receipt etc. he was unable to produce. I would advise you to prepare your documents πŸ™‚
Robert *******
No, Immigration does not care how much you pay for hotel rooms.

You ask the hotel a print screen that you are registered at the hotel address, it should look like one of these 3 print outs from the three different options

@Robert ******
thank you

@Sarah ***********
MOST hotels file the TM30 online for people who stay, when you check in ASK that they register you in the system.. Then have them go back into the system and print the screen that shows your data was entered AND saved.

You need a tm30 to extend th visa exemption stamp?
Robert *******
Normally you need an address in Thailand to stay at.

@Robert ******
I write it down on the form but never had to fill out a tm30 or show proof of residency. Were you on a tourist or visa exemption?
Robert *******
@Thinley *********
You're lucky or you have a nice landlord who file the address for you

Was at MTT today. Saw others being requested it. It’s not enforced for everyone but why not be prepared if you have the option?
Marguyvin **********
Better to be prepared and not need it, than to be unprepared and get screwed. In another group, a guy was fined 800baht for failing to register and had to pay it before they would process his visa extension.
Ahron ********
@MarGuyvin **
do you know if you can pay the 800 and be done with it? Or do they make you pay 800 and then you have to file or have one filed for you anyway.
Bobby ********
@Ahron *******
. You still have to file it.
Marguyvin **********
@Ahron *******
I don't know. You can ask the person who was fined in this other group. Look for the post by Jai Cutler, then scroll down the comments to find the post.

great thread there. Thanks

Answer is because people are asked to show it.

We can only give advice, bring it with you just in case or leave it at home and if asked, it will be another journey.
