How can I open a bank account in Thailand with a DTV visa?

For those in Phuket with a DTV looking to open a bank account, I successfully opened one at TTB, Robinson Lifestyle Thalang in just two days.

Documents I provided:

1. Passport

2. DTV

3. Driving license (from my home country) with the exact same name as in my passport

4. Cover letter from my Muay Thai gym (the same one used for my DTV application)

5. Lease agreement for my accommodation (signed by both my landlord and me)

6. A signed copy of my landlord’s ID

7. Certificate of residence from the immigration office (I got mine from Blue Tree)

Be prepared for them to keep some or all original copies of the documents. I specifically requested my original Certificate of Residence back since it may be needed for other purposes.

The process took two days. The bank wasn’t busy, but the account opening counter was slow. Their system didn’t allow DTV holders to open an account, so they had to send my application to the Bangkok main office for approval. The next morning, I got a call from the bank, went back to sign a few more forms, and walked out with my passbook, debit card, and mobile banking set up—now I can use PromptPay.

P.S. I visited every bank in Central, and all of them said no.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat in Phuket successfully opened a bank account at TTB, Robinson Lifestyle Thalang with a DTV visa, providing various documents including a passport and a cover letter from their Muay Thai gym. The process took two days, with some original documents potentially retained by the bank. Thanks for sharing the good news OP. What happens when you move and your debit card expires? Can you easily update your mailing address via the app or site?

You usually need to go to the branch where the account was opened, or if you're lucky, any branch in Thailand. It depends on the bank.

Anonymous participant 584 I needed something and was told original bank. It meant getting the company driver taking me there and one of the office admin staff to come with me to translate. I worked HQ and the bank was next to factory 1.5 hours away. When I got to the bank the Thais were talking. Told me why not just go to branch in office building in Bangkok? Now I double check everything I am told by the call centre.

Anonymous participant 584 Oh ok ! That's annoying 😅 Thanks for letting me know.

The most impotant document is a letter from some Thai institution like lamguage or muay thai schools. Those are door openers.

Congrats - good one. Need a friendly landlord then to sign off. Some of the AirbNb will not even do TM30 for their renters. Did you have to supply Country of Tax Residence and Tax ID Number on the forms?

people are still using Airbnb? That is total crap.

Lots still doing it and the Chinese using their version.

I guess you need a bit of luck with a landlord who has done TM30 for guests before.

I just skimmed through the application papers, but based on the documents I submitted, I wouldn’t have provided a Tax ID—so I’d say no?

On a side note, I showed them my DTV funds in another account, along with income statements, but they didn’t need them.

Anonymous participant It was just another guy posted he had to supply Country of Tax Residency and TIN opening TDB on Bangkok I think it was. Wondering if it had gone country wide yet. Did you have to show anything about Sim Card tied to your passport on invoice or receipt from the Telco?

Nope, the list I provided includes everything I submitted.

No deposit required, no insurance signup, nothing like that. 300 THB for the card (charged sometime within the month) and another 300-something THB for the annual fee. So, I guess you do need to deposit some cash to cover the card fee.

He did himself. Will be cost of ATM Card and initial small deposit I would guess.
