TLDR : Answer Summary
The ability to open a bank account in Thailand without the help of an agent can be challenging, especially for those on a tourist visa. While some expats have successfully opened accounts with banks like UOB and SCB, it often depends on the bank branch and the specific circumstances. Suggestions include trying to open accounts at local branches, speaking Thai, and potentially applying for a NON-O or NON-B visa to improve chances. It’s noted that using agents for account openings is generally not an option anymore.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
  • Join the Thai Visa Advice Facebook Group to ask your questions, and get advice from others.

Your best bet is to walk into various banks and see if you can. Everyone here will say is impossible, but there’s a few people that succeeded, without agents, some with. It’s highly dependent on each branch. I suspect trying to branch outside of a tourist hotspot may be better. Speaking Thai may also improve your odds. Trying multiple branches of the same bank too. Just walk into various banks, see who gives you one. Make a day out of it to see the city you’re at!

Don't count on it.

Your only choices are tag Thai, moreta pay, your creditcards or cash through western Union / foreign exchange booths or from an ATM. Take out maximum amount of cash to minimize fees.

Some Money exchange booths also exchange USDT crypto as well and some places do take crypto too including accommodation too. You'll find them in places like Bangkok / Koh Samui / Phangan / Chiang mai and likely Phuket too.
