TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion addresses the difficulties encountered by Japanese nationals when applying for Thai visas, particularly at the Thai embassy in Tokyo. Several commenters share personal experiences of rejection, highlighting that the embassy may favor alternative visa types like the TR visa over the DTV visa. It is noted that applying in Japan, especially in Tokyo, is generally more challenging compared to other locations such as Hanoi or Jakarta. Issues such as past tax payments also contribute to rejection likelihood.

I’m Japanese by the way.

I have applied twice at the Thai embassy in Tokyo(first time offline last year before they started accepting online applications and 2nd time online).

First time: they rejected me and refunded me

Second time: they rejected my application DTV after some brutal interview by 3 ladies (2 Thai and 1 Japanese woman).

As far as I know from my experience and from my friends’, I can tell you

1. They are very likely to cancel your DTV application and give you a multi entry TR visa or any other visa they think sites you more

2. Don’t apply in Japan.

3. They will ask you “if your DTV application is rejected, would you want a tr visa?”. I’d you say yes, you will 100% get a tr visa. If you say no, you might be lucky to get a DTV like Mr. ウィール once got.

4. They also asked me and my friends if they have paid tax last year (if you start your digital nomad career from this year or you are relatively new and not paid tax last year in Japan, they will very much reject you or cancel your visa)

5. But don’t worry. You can still cancel your tr visa immediately after being issued. Just email them or visit the embassy to cancel. Because with a tr visa valid, you cannot technically / theoretically cannot apply for DTV.

Hope this helps!

Don’t apply there 😊👍

Apply in Hanoi or Jakarta instead!

You mean non-japanese applying in Japan. Japan, especially Tokyo is not an easy embassy to apply from. Fukuoka seems friendlier than Tokyo though. Easier to apply in SE Asia or nearby in Taipei.

I'm not Japanese, but I was accepted at the Japanese embassy in Tokyo

No, haven't heard anything. You probably mean Japanese nationals not successful at the embassy/consulates in Japan though. It's possible, but then it's not Japanese nationals being targeted, just the embassy/consulates being picky.
