When does a visa extension in Thailand take effect: is it from the old visa's expiration date or the new application date?

If I extend my visa in thailand, from when does the new visa count? From the day my "old" visa expires or from the day I extended my visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, the effectivity of a visa extension depends on the reason for the extension. Generally, if you are extending for the same purpose as your current visa, the new visa will extend from the expiration date of your current visa. However, if you are changing the reason for your extension, the new extension will start from the date you apply, meaning you could lose any remaining days on your current visa.

This is how it USUALLY works people. IF you are applying for an extension for the same reason as the one you're on the new extension will be added to the expiration date of the stamp you have now.

BUT

IF you are applying for an extension for a DIFFERENT reason <- like going from a visa exempt or tourist visa stamp/extension to a covid extension USUALLY they start the new extension on the date you apply because it's for a different reason <- meaning you would lose any days you have left on the current stamp/extension if you switch reasons and go apply early

Does immigration also directly issue covid visa extensions for an exemption visa for 60 days? Or do you get an extension for 30 days first?

@Nik ***
its up to the office on whether you get an "under consideration" stamp and then go back on that date to get the covid extension inked in OR whether they issue it on the spot. Check with your office to see what they do

as a rule extensions are added to the date your current stamp expires UNLESS you're changing reasons for your extension and then they start on the day you apply.

its the same with the Covid extension? So if my stamp is 14. august, if i go next week to extend I will get till 14. October?

perfect, thx a lot for the Infos Tod

ah ok interesting, do you know how many days before I can apply for this?

@Norbert **********
if you're using bangkok and got your last extension at Chaengwattana you can only go THREE days before you current extension runs out. IF you're using MTT immigration office you can go a few weeks before and most other offices in the country allow you to go when you have 30 days or less left on your stamp.

tourist entry, one time normal extension and actual on covid extension already one time.

@Nor****
, yeah, okay, you're not on a tourist visa entry <- that covered you for 60 days when you got here, AND you're not on a 30 day extension that you get from a visa exempt or tourist visa entry because you used that already too

As it is now you're actually ON a covid extension and that means if you went to apply for another covid extension they'd add the new 60 days to your current expiration date.

@Norbert **********
and what type of entry stamp or extension are you on now?
