When can I withdraw my 800,000 THB down to 400,000 THB in Thailand after a visa extension?

May 12, 2024
7 months ago
At what date can the 800,000 THB start to be withdrawn down to 400,000 THB?

I know that it's 3 months, but is that 90 days from 15 of Feb, or is that 3 calendar months March, April & May and the money can be dipped into from the 1st of June?

Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To withdraw from your 800,000 THB balance to 400,000 THB after a visa extension, the rule allows you to do so 3 calendar months from the date of your extension application. If your extension was granted on February 15, 2024, you can begin withdrawing the funds on May 16, 2024, making it advisable to wait until then to avoid any issues. Members of the community emphasize the importance of adhering to the date rather than counting 90 days, as withdrawal dates are closely monitored during visa renewals.

Thanks for all the answers... to sum up, I'll be better off waiting until the 23rd or 24th of May onwards and then it should be fine to drop under 800,000.

Itโ€™s too much trouble! I just leave the 800,000 in the Bank! What happens if you have an Emergency? You should have at least 1.2 million Bhat in the Bank! Or Retire in the Philippines itโ€™s cheaper! Less paperwork!

The rule states you can go below 800,000 but not under 400,000 3 months from DATE OF APPLICATION. I speak from first hand experience at CW. For the last few years I have withdrawn my balance to under 800,000 just after 3 months from renewing my extension and have had no issues. They have also clarified this to me numerous times after each renewal when I make sure of the date I can withdrawal. So in your case if you obtained your renewal on Feb 15, 2024 - you can withdrawal 90 days after that. Just to be safe I would make it 100 days so some time around late May you should be ok.

be careful spouting out ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—น ๐Ÿต๐Ÿฌ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ because the rule ISN'T 90 days it's 3 months ๐Ÿ˜ฎ and the way they count calendar months is date to date (which often works out to MORE than 90 days ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

I'm still sticking with 3 months after the date the extension comes into effect and believe that is the safest advice to give for all 80+ immigration offices

@James *****
, It's not an application date.

The Police order says "After being granted permission for 3 months."

That causes some immigration offices to count 3 months from the application date, while others count from the day the new extension starts.

The best is checking with your local immigration office how they count for 3 months.

Well in almost every case you are granted permission on the application date and they stamp that date in your passport. In my first hand experience it is 3 months from that stamped date.

@James *****
, in that case, please state which immigration office you use so that the information can help others without confusion..

Calendar months , so anytime after 16th May

Remember the new income tax rules, if u draw down on the 800k you have to top it up again and this might put u in a higher tax band for that year!

Personally if I was that worried about it I would go with the longer of the two + 1 day to avoid any problems ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes, always err on the side of caution and saying that plan for the worst case scenario

The rule is written ambiguously, BUT it's being interpreted as 3 months after your new extension takes effect (which in theory is the day your previous extension ran out)

I would say on your stamps you can draw the money down any time after May 23,

It is 3 calendar months date to date so don't mis-count thinking it's 90 days. Had a friend do that, and when he went for his next yearly extension the officer looked at the yearly transaction report and saw that he'd pulled the money out 2 days early. She told him he was technically on overstay since the day he failed to meet the requirements for his current extension

ugggg and this is why I have one account that I donโ€™t touch and a separate bank account for my daily spending in Thailand. Hehe

I was told that you have to show movement on the account . A static account is not acceptable. Canโ€™t remember when or where I was told that so Iโ€™ve never done it. Like everything else here it depends who you see and a what office.

@Ian *******
who told you that you need movement in the account? Makes no sense to me

I was able to use the bank book from the fixed for my approval of my first one-year extension but I also took both bank books with me. Hopefully this will keep working each year.

You may want to touch your account every now and then (even if itโ€™s to add just a couple baht), as I think or heard somewhere inactive accounts can get locked , closed or something unpleasant.

hmm if I have two bank accounts at the same branch of Bangkok bank and I use one of the accounts often and both show in the app, I wonder if this will be an issue for the static accountโ€ฆ

But based on your comment, I just did a small transfer from my daily account to the fixed account. Thanks! ๐Ÿ˜€

I think itโ€™s a good move. At times I used to forget about my 800,000 baht account because I normally use the monthly 65k a month method (same branch ) to retain my extension of stay, and the 800k account as a backup just in case of miss coding the transfer as a domestic transfer by the banks or whatever could mess me up. Now I just transfer a few baht every few months to avoid any issues.
