TLDR : Answer Summary
You can generally apply for an extension of your visa 30 to 45 days before it expires, depending on the office you are dealing with. Confirm the specific timeline with your local immigration office.

James Miller - I have read of guys processing an Extension of Stay at the end of the first year of the O-A instead of just doing a border bounce. One can go straight to an Extension of Stay at the of the first year or wait until the end of the second year without getting an O Visa.

Thank you for added information. You did not have an O-A. If you did you would have been stamped in for one full year upon your arrival into Thailand.

As its nighttime in Asia, lets await replies on Thursday. Thank you.

Most offices accept applications 30days before,

some (including BGK, . ) are 45 days

PS - you're not renewing a visa, you're applying for a new extension of temporary stay.
