We are about to apply for our non-OA (retirement) visas (we are both 50) for an early December arrival. What type of visas should our two kids come under? They are 12 and 10. I can’t seem to get a straight answer from the embassy…

TLDR : Answer Summary
The parents are applying for Non-OA retirement visas and are inquiring about the appropriate visa options for their two children aged 12 and 10. Responses suggest that the children can apply for Non-O visas as dependents of the long-term visa holders. This will allow them an initial stay of three months, which can be extended in-country to match the parents' visa duration. It is also noted that if the children attend an international school, they could consider an Education (Ed) visa. An alternative option mentioned is the new BOI’s long-term resident (LTR) visa, which allows dependents and has fewer documentation requirements than the Non-OA visa.

You can go for non O which doesn't have the same insurance rules

Since you are both 50 have you considered the BOI’s new 10 year LTR visa? Requires an income showing, but you can work, avoid 90 day reporting (annual instead), income from abroad is tax sheltered and up to 4 dependents can be included. Here’s an article and go to the BOI’s LTR site for more information:
thank you for this. We had heard about it but dismissed it since at this moment in time, we aren’t clear as to how long we would like to stay in Thailand. A lot will depend on the kids and wether they enjoy their new school. But I looked at the article you sent and it seems there are less documents required (less hoops?) than the non-OA? Is that correct? I’m all for what is simpler and straight forward as I have to admit, the visa process appears to be quite a headache!
I’d be happy to have a free consult. In the states for a couple of weeks visiting first grandchild so if this is of interest send me a note to my attention at
Get them O visas as your dependents then they can be added to your annual Extension of Stay, assuming that's what you plan to get. They can continue to extend like this every year. No need for them to have their own Ed visa/extensions.
thanks for that! So we are planning on sending them to school but are hoping to visit schools in person before committing. We are assuming it would be much easier to get them a long term visa before entering Thailand instead than having them enter as tourists and then changing that to ED visas. Would you agree?
