TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, for the 800,000 baht requirement of a retirement visa, you typically need to open a savings account. However, it often functions similarly to a current account, as many users report conducting day-to-day transactions from these accounts without significant interest. It's important to note that to open a bank account in Thailand, you generally need a long-term visa, not just a tourist visa.

Savings but works similar to current account, u get zero interest and you can shop with it direct from the app
Max *************
You can also keep the 800k in a Fixed Deposit Account.
Neil ********
@Max ************
how much interest does that give?
Mike ******
Always ask for a savings account...
Max *************
@Mike *****
You can start with a savings account and then open a Fixed Deposit Account where you can park the money for immigration.
Mike ******
@Max ************
most expats have 2 accounts...one for immigration...and one for day to day expenses
Mike ******
You can open a bank savings account very easy with a blue book...and long term visa....extension off stay...
Mike ******
A fixed deposit account...is a savings account...
Mike ******
What ever account you have
Mike ******
@Max ************
the money needs to be instant access at all times
Max *************
@Mike *****
The money is,but you never withdraw money from an FDA because you will lose interest.Get it? Where do you think I park a large piece of my money? It's allowed at immigration. Then I use my savings accounts for daily transactions and payments.
Mike ******
@Max ************
your saving account...must be instant access
Clive *********
Virtually no interest for non Thais
Max *************
@Clive ********
Well,that's why you can park your money for immigration in a Fixed Deposit Account. The interest is much higher than in a savings account. That's where a large part of my money is parked.
Simon *********
It's a savings account, but functions as current account
Paul ******
Mine went in current account. No problems
Neil ********
Savings account here is a current account as per UK without the option of a credit card.
Alistair ********
@Neil *******
I have a savings account with Bangkok bank with a credit card and also a deposit account with fixed term interest. Am on a retirement visa and could only open the latter after converting the non O to the retirement visa
Ian *******
@Alistair *******
but non O is a retirement visa isn't it?
Brook ********
@Neil *******
I got a credit card at K bank.

Last I checked, banks offer up to 2.5% interest, depending on term of commitment (6 months - 2 years) with substantial interest penalty for early withdrawal.
Robert *******
@Brook *******
you’re not on a non-o otherwise you wouldn’t get a credit card
Brook ********
@Robert ******
but I AM on a Non-O my friend.
Robert *******
@Brook *******
really then you got a income here in Thailand? I’m with Bangkok Bank they insist on 15k income at least
Brook ********
@Robert ******
retired but not without assets.
Robert *******
@Brook *******
same here only no income from inside of Thailand they not accepting rental income from Germany or my retirement pension from the Netherlands
Neil ********
@Brook *******

the embassy in HCMC told me having proof of monthly deposits (SS) and retirement accounts in a brokerage is sufficient. My point being that I didn't want to transfer such a huge sum of money from retirement and incur a heavy income tax burden.
Jim *******
@Ken *******
Who is HCMC?

@Jim ******
Ho Chi Minh City, ya know, Vịet Nam.

Uncle Ho Chi Minh in his city.

They call it “savings account” but it’s in fact a current account.
Nigel **************
@Peter *********
yeah I think you are correct. The QR code works off it so it must be 'current'. 😉
Dexter ******
I'm not moving until Jan 2026, should I open my account in thailand from now and begin transferring money into it from now????
Paul *********
@Dexter *****

Pour moi mon compte est un compte courant je peux même payer les commerçants via le scanne
Michael *******
SCB Easi Pass offers 2.5% before tax if you plan to keep the 800k here been using if for 5 years - it’s an immediate access deposit a/c which keeps immig happy
Ling *****
@Michael ******
according to the website it is only 1.5% interest. I do agree though that the others pay way less than that.
Michael *******
It’s changed since we opened it, hadn’t really noticed we still get about B13k a year after tax…..

Thank you 🙏

I understand I can apply for this whilst still in the UK.

@Phillip *********
My understanding was you could only open a bank account in person in Thailand. Is that incorrect?
Tom ********
@Phi****
Yes you can
Stuart *********
For a foreigner it will be a savings account.
Max *************
@Stuart ********
A Fixed Deposit Account also works.

@Stuart ********
Thank you. Will this account offer any interest payments and will it issue a bank card to use at ATM’s?
Michael *******
@Phillip *********
SCB does with their easi pass and it meets Immig requirements and all online no irritating passbook

op🙏🏻, I know the interest need to pay tax and Thai baht around 1%.. i saw a promotion on bk bank offer 3.8% for usd, (since other overseas banks has 4.1 to 4.3 thesedays) but that 800k count .. question :

- If time deposits still qualified as 800k when renewal visa but not mature

- any other Thai bank or Thai institutions like broker account uninvested cash that 800k still accepted by visa extension?

And can that 800k sit in overseas bank?

Thx
Poul **********
@Phillip *********
once the account is approved and active, ATM card, debit only not credit, can be issued on the spot. My savings account at Kbank yields 0.25% interest, payable June and December, minus withholding tax, I think 15%. With the high inflation we have now, money sitting in a savings account is loosing purchasing value
Jay *******
@Phillip *********
interest will be next to nothing. I know you can get a bank card at Bangkok Bank but unsure about the others.
Dwayne ********
@Jay ******
all of them
Stuart *********
@Phillip *********
Probably more or less than around 1%.

@Phillip *********
yep if you are with Bank of Bangkok but don’t expect a lot of interest! They also take off taxes the same day you touch interest 😂😂
Jozef *********
@Yvan *********
you can get all your taxes refunded on your savings account by requesting a TIN (Tax Identify Number) from the Revenue Department.
