TLDR : Answer Summary
This discussion revolves around concerns from an expatriate whose educational visa (ED visa) school is increasing the mandatory Thai language classes from once a week to four times a week. Many participants express various opinions, including logistical challenges for those with work commitments, suggestions for alternative visa options, and comments on the intended use of the ED visa for legitimate education. There is a consensus that current immigration scrutiny is increasing due to past abuses of the visa system, and participants debate the changing landscape of visa regulations in Thailand.

So what if you actually want to use the Ed visa for its intended purpose.

The classes should be online, then it will make sense.

Sounds like you should be glad that you were able to enjoy the loophole for some period of time.
well,it’s clear from comments by the OP, that the goal is not about learning Thai, it’s about having a visa to be able to stay long term..

Maybe ED is short for education.

Big Joke is on the case.

Maybe ask if they can do any of the classes virtually. That way, you’d still be spending four hours a week learning, but you wouldn’t be spending time commuting back and forth to a classroom. So there’d be less of a hit to your productivity.

So what's the problem? Ed visa =so go stydy 🙄

They play it twice a day . Everyone should learn to sing the national anthem
kind of agree. If you are going to learn the national anthem, you should be doing so and understanding the words, or else it is simply memorizing words as you said.
should be easier practical language like shopping and ordering food and greetings

Which is what it's supposed to be - 8 hours minimum a week and legit schools typically run them over four days a week. If you don't want to turn up to class and actually learn, go and get a proper visa.

They’re getting strict because of the Chinese criminals who were rorting the system with dodgy ED Visas supplied by dodgy IO’s

The issue is and has always been that people (including you clearly) have been using these and similar visas as long term tourist visas.
No harm no foul IMO to use loopholes. But you have to be aware said loop holes can end.
Seems like a crack down is happening.
You have a few choices.
1. Get a visa that is more in line with what you want.
If you have the money Thai Elite is your best bet. But since you run an online business you could possible get a visa off of that as well.
2. Focus on the Nomad part of being a digital nomad.
Thailand normally seems to have no problem with people sending about half the year as a tourist in Thailand. So you could stay in Thailand 3-6 months and then travel in other countries for the other 6-9 months.
3. Go to a country that is more open to long term stays.
Some like PH without loop holes will allow it. PH specifically allows many nationalities to extend up to 36 months and then border bounce and start over with less than 24hrs outside the country. (Think dinner in Singapore) Others have loop holes you could use that like Thailand may go away. But in loads of places there are always loopholes. Thailand has long been one of those places and we all know it have heard of someone who has been in Thailand for decades without a true long term visa.
4. You could find another loop hole that is working long term for Thailand. Like I said Thailand has long been a country known for them.
Pre-covid IMO the writing was on the wall that they were going to start cracking down more. Post-covid we have seen people who used covid extensions struggle to get back in without spending significant time outside the country. And of course reports like this.
Thailand doesn’t seem to want long term tourists. It might have nothing to do with people like yourself but you are clearly caught up in it. Doesn’t really matter if they are targeting you or random Chinese nationals (as another comment suggests) with these enforcement changes. You have to deal with them.
I personally don’t think option 4 is a good option myself. But I’m not you so maybe you will.
Either way education visas seem to be out for your personally.
Thailand certainly does want long term tourists... but only the ones who have enough money to not worry about getting an elite visa... or the ones who are older.
I agree with be here for couple months, go to the Philippines a couple months etc.
Unless you want to get a valid non O visa etc these bounder bounces are hard work now

They aren’t issuing Ed visas in country at present and a lot aren’t able to extend every 3months. Massive clampdown and they aren’t messing about this time.
TiT everything is cyclical…stop being a fear mongering sensationalist…this is not the first time the Ed visa has come under scrutiny and it won’t be the last time

Wow, the nerve of the immigration folks. It's almost as if they are trying to make sure people are using the visa for what it was intended for!
There were times when you could live in this country on unlimited border runs or tourist visas or on Ed visas that weren’t actually ever used for learning. I’m not knocking it, I lived here for 2 years on tourist visas and no one said anything, those days seem to be changing and I had to adjust my visa status accordingly…Not really sure where naivety fits into it..it’s not far fetched to believe that things aren’t as lax as they once were…I also honestly don’t see why anyone should feel it is unfair or surprising that anyone on an Ed visa would be asked to show proof of hours studied per week. Yes, it’s been lax for years but..if you are here on a marriage visa, you have to prove you are married to a Thai right? Same with a B visa, you must be….working…

It’ll all die down after showing they’re “doing something” and then it’ll go back to the norm.
What happened after the last crackdown in around 2014 is that it was strict for a couple of years and then it eventually became lax. It won't be lax anytime soon, particularly given the alleged Chinese criminal element to the rorting.
I don't know my opinion matters much... But I do not think so. Seems like Ed visa are probably going to be much stricker going forward. Thailand is trying to bring the high value people, Ed abuser are not what they want so their no incentive for them.

This might be helpful to some of you. It was posted yesterday on here
just think of you take Muay Thai classes immigration will bring in a Muay Thai champion to check your Muay Thai fighting techniques to see if you’re actually going to class
It's already enforced. You have to write 2 Tests in 8 Months. If you can not read well you will not enter the next 5 Months. But well,if the School is cheating nothing will change. And I believe the national Anthem story is a myth. That's not what you learn in the school.
no I think they might go through all the different visas and try to stop the corrupt way many are issued. M guess is they won't get banned , leaving the option of applying in the correct way
how do u think immigration gets tips? (it might come as a surprise to u but probably half of arrests and visa cancelations comes from tip off from fellow foreigners) some places more then others Pattaya is top there is literally a avalanche of detailed tip offs flooding immigration..
feel free to share news reports of tourists being deported for working online. Or any online post from someone who's been deported or visa cancelled for that reason.
u wrote in visa group saying "I'm on ed visa but now i will have to actually study.. 🙄.. But i can't be bothered as I'm actually working in direct contradiction to ed visa rules.. Did i leave anything out? 🤷♂️Good going
u dont seem to grasp the fact that u doing something wrong? u share on visa platform that u currently breaking the rules.. Then almost complain that u will now actually be inconvenienced by having to abide the the very rules u agreed to follow.. And on top of it u say well others are doing it... 🙄Ok....its a visa advice platform not a place to learn how to break rules.. U want advice on that head down to nearest bar..

Филипп Адебайоо Let me tell you something you obv don't know. The owner of this group is the biggest agent in Thailand. You can see their name on the banner above. Let that sink it for a moment. If you still don't get what I'm trying to say, I can explain for the dummy later.
with ED visa, you are not allowed to work in Thailand, not even online for a foreign company, strictly speaking, even youtubers need a NonB with work permit
Maxim ***********
So many brain dead people in this group. Do not listen to the clueless patronizing annoying people above. I've been here 12 years and these kind of people don't know what to do with their time so they spend it spewing non-sense on FB. The FB waste of space troll care more about your online business then the authorities, lol!
well ide say most expats who live in thailand have some sort of income online. it doesnt seem to be enforced
Sam *********
many expats who live and work in Thailand also have proper visas and have gone through the correct channels. Honestly, like Istvan says, it’s the abuse of the Ed visa system that has made it harder for people who truly want to come here to study, to be able to do so
dear god all the shaming and scolding in this group is sick. The guy can make his own decisions and clearly doesn’t need any elders to tell him what to do so
he can obviously make bad decisions, so perhaps he, and you, could listen to the wiser and more experienced in the group. The abuse of the ED visa like this is now directly affecting 1000's of people in many ways, and this little prick is complaining about having to do more lessons ? Doesn't matter if its Chinese mafia, or a middle class twat. So 'clearly' he does need the elders of the group to offer advise, and even accept their criticisms. Are you his boyfriend ? 😘
rules are rules, this is the reason why legitimate students are struggling to get the proper education visas, do everything properly from the beginning, then there is no reason to complain that your school is increasing studying times
Congrats "rules are rules" is the dumbest thing I've read all week here. This is Thailand, buddy. Perhaps, stay here for more then 2 weeks and u'll learn why your statement is funny af from foreigners pov like me who have been here for a very long time.
Cry me a river. He's not the reason why. They are cracking down on Chinese running call/scam center, gambling casino online, etc, with a lot of them on Ed Visa.
you have a choice... Get ED visa and do 4/week or no ED visa and staying in the country for 1 year long... I guess you are one of who just need an ED but not want to learn thai. 4 times a week... That's 8h/week... If you can't do that you are really s..t with time management.. i was basically devastated when they said i have only 2*2/week... So maybe if you have a business get an elit visa.... Because people like you is the reason why the whole ED visa situation is in deep s..t and i have to wait much longer to mine be done who really want to learn and not just use as an excuse...
really, on a private group? It's Thailand. They really don't care that someone's working remotely, and they aren't going around fb groups trying to catch people.
