What should I do if my PCR test is positive but I have no symptoms while in Thailand?

My second PCR test came back positive and I have no symptoms whatsoever. I told my hotel and they transferred me to another hotel for quarantine since my hotel doesn't provide quarantine. I have a tune insurance and as far as I know they don't cover hotel isolation but the reciption guys at both my old and new hotel are saying they do, so I'm really hoping it's the case. We're trying to call my insurance company but we never made it to their call center. Has anyone gone through this recently and would like to share his experience?

Moreover, I looked up the hotel prices in Agoda and turns out they're giving me more than double the actual price!

I'm thinking I might end up in a hospital quarantine and will be going to Phuket International Hospital. In this case I'm sure my insurance will cover it fully. Anyone has been there before for quarantine?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user recently tested positive for COVID-19 but is asymptomatic and is facing challenges regarding insurance coverage for hotel quarantine. He has been transferred to a quarantine hotel and is unsure if his insurance (Tune) will cover the costs. Several comments advise that typically, one must pay upfront and later claim from insurance, and that specific conditions regarding COVID-19 symptoms might affect coverage. Others mention similar experiences with insurance claims and quarantine procedures in Phuket, indicating that communication with the hospital might clarify coverage details.

I been all over thailand for 30 days , and stayed negative the whole time. Do you wear a mask ?

If you followed the link from Thai visa to Agoda, the price is huge! Look closely at the Agoda price, in small print, they do say "book on our app". So I did, and the price is around 60% less...

2 things. Start coughing now and tell them you have sore throat. You don't need to show symptoms, just tell them you have them

Next. As one person already mentioned. Deny all medical services. This is where they charge the most. Medicine, daily nurse visits. Tell them you do not wanted any of it.

Sadly this is part of the process of coming to Thailand for many now. I went through it and got a 100k bill. 90k was the medical.

My insurance cost about 3,000 for 2 months. This would suggest that its profitable for companies if there are fewer than 33 to 1 people they have to pay-out. I wonder what the actual ration of claims have to be paid. I think the insurance is a scam. I would hate to pay 100,000 for medical service but I would understand and willing pay.

I contacted tune almost a month ago through email asking questions…. Guess what they didnt answer me, I’m sure they don’t want to cover anything. Hopefully you can call and get through with someone. Good luck!

My insurance says it covers quarantine - Admiral in UK...so presumably this scenario is insured

Refuse any treatments, scans or medicine you don't think you need, as they might just be doing it so they can bill you for it later
Geoff ******
did you have covid recently? if you did you can apply for a certificate of recovery which can get you out of it.

if not, then i understsnd if you have no symptoms you can isolate in a hotel that caters for that?

im in phuket now and i get the feeling they are getting more and more relaxed about it by the day .

i came with a positive test and a recovery cert. from nhs..i had covid end of december ..and i was allowed to enter sandbox..the hotel staff told me worse case was id have to isolate in hotel

I would take another PCR to be sure. Mistakes, and errors happen, especially in Thailand.
Ellen ******
does anyone know if you can request (or demand) another test be taken?

I think one of the symptoms of Covid is a raging headache (hint hint).

Hospitel is under a specific hospital. Contact the hospital and clarify insurance issues. Very likely the the hospital already clarified with the insurance company. Less stressful that way.

@Rampi *******
Yes that's exactly what the reception guys told me
Shariq ******
Hope you recover soon. Please keep all clarifications sorted before the discharge date as insurance & hospital may come up with some weird charges and explanations, which you might have to end up paying.

"expenses of Quarantined with no symptoms or treatment is not covered under the policy unless the insured is tested positive

to COVID-19 and that government regulation requires hospitalization for monitoring"
Wyn **********
@Ahmed *******
if not positive doesnt matter what you have.
Peter ******
Insurance is always for specific conditions, not other way around.

If no mention of (or explicitly excludes) asymptomatic then not covered.
KK **********
Make sure your insurance covers a systematic cases of covid or you will not get paid
Lanny *******
I have Tune insurance also many ??? keep us posted.
Gordon *******
If you haven’t got symptoms you won’t be taken to hospital you will have to stay in quarantine in the hospotel as they’ve transferred you to , good luck with the insurance claim , also the price is different for quarantine than normal hotel prices
Stuart **********
@Gordon ******
it's very much dependant upon the insurer if they will pay out for asymptomatic cases as they often view it as a quarantine situation and not a medical situation. It's a risk everyone takes 👍

They do if you are admitted to a hospital
Becky **********
@Steven *********
if you are admitted. They claim directly from the insurance company. Most insurance companies anyway. I’ve lived in Thailand for a long time and never paid in advance
Steven **********
@Becky *********
people who travel Hoilday will pay first then claim after from their insurance it happened all the time it same when u have car accidents both work same way
Nick **********
@Steven *********
If they have the right insurance, then people traveling on holiday don't have to pay first and then claim after from the insurance if they have to stay in a hospital. Hospital will bill directly with the insurance.

If you have had other experiences, I believe you. But that means you had a different insurance.
Steven **********
@Nick *********
lots people have problem with insurance If you look at the photo I post under the comment u see
Nick **********
@Steven *********
I'm not saying there are never problems (depending on wrong insurance or other problems), but it is definitely possible to have direct billing if you have the right insurance.

In my view :

First of all, choose the right insurance.

Second : make sure you know the right steps and the correct communication channels before you need it, write it down on your insurance paper. Be prepared. So you don't lose time and avoid miscommunication problems at the moment you are too sick to deal with anything.

Third : get your insurance through a good local agent. When there is a problem, the help of your agent will maken a huge difference clearing up any mess.

Learned from experience.
Steven **********
@Nick *********
I know how insurance work out been there most insurance won’t cover the pay they always say u have to pay first and claim back after which most insurance do it same when u have a car accident both work the same way some insurance company are different people still get problem with travel insurance some won’t cover some do
Nick **********
@Steven *********
you changed your story. First you say that "you have to pay first", then you admit that this is not always the case.

That's the whole point : it depends on the insurance and possible misunderstandings or mistakes in some cases.
Steven **********
@Nick *********
lots people having big problem with insurance
Nick **********
@Steven *********
that's why you have to buy the right insurance from the right agent
Dimitri ********
@Steven *********
It depends on the insurance company. Most Thai companies with Covid insurance will pay the hospital directly.
