TLDR : Answer Summary
A new proposal is under discussion in Thailand aimed at addressing visa concerns for tourists affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Key points include potential automatic extensions for visas that expired on or after March 26, 2020, without requiring tourists to visit immigration offices. However, discussions have generated confusion and frustration among expats regarding the clarity of the terminology used, and many are seeking definitive information on how the proposal will be implemented. As the situation is still evolving, the final approval and guidelines for this proposal are awaited by the community.
"Good news at last! The prime minister has now signed the visa amnesty document. I’m told the Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau has just briefed all police officers on this. Hopefully there will be an official statement very soon #COVID19 #โควิด19 #Thailand
Action is needed now. Right now I'm supposed to somehow get through checkpoints supposed to stop people leaving Ao Nang and go and crowd into immigration in Krabi just to get a stamp. If this is so serious then take some serious action so people don't need to travel unnecessarily. You are forcing people to travel against quarantine guidelines and then crowding them into perfect conditions for virus spread.
I think it is to be read everyone whose visa expired after the 26th (and not the date of the report) and reported to extend them would have automatic extensions, but am not sure. Why don't they just decide on blanket extensions no matter the date to simplify things? I know why TiT, but it's ridiculous.
I think then you would be covered as someone who arrived after March 1 to get automatic extensions on the earlier proposal if that one is passed as well.
what if yours expires after the 26th but you haven't reported to extend yet? mine expires April 11. I don't want to go to the IO and risk gettig/spreading COVID..
"For foreign tourists in the second group who reported to immigration authorities for a 30-day extension after their visas expired on March 26 or thereafter, their visas will be automatically renewed every 30 days until the pandemic subsides, said Pol Lt Gen Sompong."
What is relevant about March 26? Basically, if you renewed before March 26, then they want everyone back in for another round?
Flights are not. There are large areas of Thailand that are without ways to get to Bangkok. And flights is too vague. Your attempt at being an apologist doesn't cut the empirical reality.
They came to Thailand before the virus hit their hometowns and decided not to return home, fearing they would not receive sufficient healthcare in their countries during these trying times but are now left with few options, said Pol Lt Gen Sompong.
Parts of this article are a bit misleading in that there are a lot of definitive statements made in the quotes even though nothing's been finalized.
For example:
"Under the government's social distancing policy, these tourists will no longer have to visit the immigration bureau and risk contracting the virus in a crowd," he said."
