With many countries closing their borders what happens to those people in Thailand that need to renew visas etc. I know they arent meant to be in thailand long term on tourist visas but lets face it lots do. Also many people are renewing other visa types. Has anyone heard of any emergency measures or grace periods that the Thai government have announced?

TLDR : Answer Summary
With the COVID-19 pandemic causing border closures, many expats in Thailand are unsure how to renew their visas. There have been discussions about emergency measures, allowing individuals to extend their stays and avoid penalties for overstaying. Some comments suggest that those facing difficulties due to the pandemic may be able to obtain a one-time extension by getting a letter from their consulate and applying before overstaying. It is also noted that while there are options for extending some visa types, others still require exiting and re-entering Thailand to maintain their status.

I guess it is all clear. NO there are no special regulations made that allow foreigners to overstay for free as long as there are viruses or other sicknesses in the world.

Time to go back to normal life, Stay healthy everyone

I have to apply for a new non-b visa in April. So far all bus services and the embassy in Vientiane are taking bookings, so I'm just treating it as business as usual until told otherwise. There's no sense in worrying about things that are out of our control.

I think that is sound advice. Until you hear different just plan normally..

okay listen up boyz and squirrellz.. AT THIS TIME <- meaning right now as it is today there is NO provision to cut ANYONE any slack as far as needing to go to another country and BUY a visa from a thai consulate, OR to go to a border bounce out and back in to activate a new entry on a multi-entry visa OR to get an in country extension on any visa type.

The ONLY thing the thai immigration office did was state that IF you go to your consulate BEFORE you run on overstay and get a letter from them stating you can't travel they will sell you a 30 day extension for 1900baht. (Now AFAIK; they are ONLY doing this for people on 15 day visa on arrival, 30 day visa exempt or 30 day visa waiver OR 60 day tourist visa entries). I have NOT personally seen ANY of these 30 day covid-19 extensions issued for any other visa types.

AND remember you have to get the letter from your consulate AND you have to go apply for the extension BEFORE you start running on overstay.

There were HUNDREDS of chinese out at Chaengwattana with the letter from their consulate getting those extensions in section K almost every day last week.

I just came back in from Malaysia via Wang Prachan this morning after my tourist visa expires. Got a 30 day visa exemption no problems. Had to stay one night in Malaysia.

. What nationality are you?

For people on multiple entry visas like one year marriage visa without cash deposit, meaning that you have to leave every 90 days, you can now extend within Thailand.

, IF you have a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type visa (OF ANY TYPE) where you bounce out and back every 90 days you could ALWAYS have gotten a yearly extension by meeting the financial requirements for that extension type. There is NO provision to cut people on year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant visas ANY slack at all in the requirement that you exit/re-enter the country every 90 days.

You either meet the requirements to get an extension inside the country (and those requirements haven't chanced a bit with covid-19) OR you bounce every 90 days and where/how you bounce is on you.

@David *********
following. Took a day flight out and in yesterday on multiple v, for another 90 days

@Da***
Thompson That is great news! Is this also for Non-B Multiple Entry or do we still have to borderbounce for the 90 days?

Mine almost expires and like to stretch the visa now to sit out the worldwide situation with another 90 days as soon as possible before it does.

@David *********
. Yes. I actually have enough confidence in the Thai government to treat Long Stay visas (e.g O, OA) with more flexibility than they will Tourist Visas.
Mik **********
@David *********
is this done at your local Immigration Office?
Bobby ********
As you don't actually "renew" a visa inside Thailand - you only get an extension of stay - your best strategy is to renew to the furthest date possible and to monitor the situation. It's no good panicking at this stage when the government itself is very fluid with its decision. Just hope that the Thai government don't use this virus as a way to cull the "tourist" ex-pat population who are here with the wrong visas

@Bobby *******
Absolutely.

Goverment stayed previously,

Anyone caught up in virus problem, can stay over with no fine or blacklist.

But u will need to sort this beforehand with immigration.
Tod *********
try to stay accurate, they did NOT say there would be no fines OR no blacklisting. They said that IF people went to their consulate, got a letter stating they couldn't travel that they could go to the immigration office BEFORE they started being on overstay and get a 30 day extension for 1900baht.

Survive first, deal with legalities later... Governments worldwide are in panic mode, no long term strategizing possible right now

I have to go to Chang Wattana next week to renew annual retirement visa.... usually takes half a day and it’s a pretty crowded space to wait in....pretty popular place to contact carona virus? Any alternatives suggested?

wear mask when at immigration . Wash hands regularly.

If you have to cough, cover your mouth

. They started screening at CW weeks ago. Anyone above 37.2 temperature was refused entry. Everyone entering had to use hand sanitiser. For the few hours you'll be in there you have adequate control. Don't sit near anyone coughing or spluttering. Don't touch anything with your bare hands, especially metal surfaces. You'll be fine.
Amornrat **********
been there yesterday, you will be screened before yu enter.
