I bought a new Ford a few ago and they arranged the insurance and also what I would call the government car tax, for this I pay about 8,000THB a year, a friend of mine said I must be paying for additional insurance as the standard cost is about 3,000THB, does anyone know how it works in detail?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the cost of car insurance and government tax for a new Ford vehicle in Thailand. The user pays approximately 8,000 THB annually, which raises questions about whether they are overpaying for insurance compared to the standard rate of about 3,000 THB. Comments reveal various opinions on insurance classes, with first-class insurance typically costing more and covering broader aspects, including repair options. Many users share their experiences with different insurance providers and emphasize the importance of understanding the extent of coverage rather than focusing on just the price.

It all depends on the class of insurance and what that entitled you to. 1st class insurance is the most expensive but there are also a couple of layers to that. I pay extra to ensure that if needed my car gets repaired by the dealer rather than a third party shop. For the 1st 3 years this was automatic but not now the car is a bit older

When I bought my car the dealer arranged the insurance at 20k. On renewal he asked for 18k plus 800 service charge. Then I found Mr Prakan insurance at 7500 per year!!! Been paying it ever since. There is also Roojai to try.

Also Roojai.com. If you go with them let me know. I may be able to find a referral code that gives a discount.

I've been paying a big amount too like 20k and I've no idea what is covered.. mr prakan seems like a good place to get clarification and get a less expensive policy

yes true. I found out it was the same company and policy that the dealer charged 20k for. Try them. Mrprakan.com

I am surprised by some here and friends that when asked they haven't the slightest idea what the coverage limits are for their auto policy, they simply know a price. policy benefits do vary per company, compare with several and get sufficient coverage in case of injury or fatal accident, especially if it involves Thai citizens. Too late afterwards to learn that your policy about which you were so thrilled because it was so inexpensive, fails protect you financially in case of serious accident.

To be clear I fully understand my first class insurance policy in detail and the compulsory government policy, my question was about a potential price difference which is for the car tax (as it turns out), where you pay less

KTHB for a smaller engine and more

Don't listen to your friend, if you have doubts talk to your insurance provider or get a Thai friend to read your policy. Important thing is you have the correct cover.

Shaun Sandham yes I am, but before I can go to see them. I wondered if an enlightened individual could cast some light on the subject. Which I rather thought was what this group was about.

you should have a certificate of insurance both for the compulsory and additional insurance you have bought. That should explain what is covered. New cars are the most expensive to insure. I bought mine off Mr Prakan a broker who was very helpful. My vehicle is 20 years old and level 2 insurance cost 7000 baht. Your cost seems low for the most comprehensive cover.

Nick Cartwright my first class insurance is about 19KTHB the government Insurance is about 8KTHB, its this one I'm interested in, because I was told it should be 3KTHB

if you go on to roojai.com it will generate an insurance quote as an example - in the blue book you get with the car it will tell you what the annual tax is.

There is an annual tax and compulsory insurance you hv to have and then you purchase additional first or second class from a vendor of your choice if you wish to have extra cover

Actually sounds a bit low for first class insurance.

But depends Ford car or truck and if truck makes a difference 2 door or 4 door

I would want to see clearly defined coverage benefits-- maybe high deductibles added, low max payouts, etc.

First class cover cost more than second class and B 8k sounds correct.
