Hi all. I am returning to the US next week, and my school is telling me they will not cancel my work permit until after I leave. I thought I had to do that and cancel my visa to be allowed to leave. Is that still the process?

Also, if I do a covid test the day before and test positive can I go to bkk immigration and get a covid extension? Assuming I will have only the 7 day visa to leave Thailand.

Thanks for your help!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process of leaving Thailand involves managing both your visa and work permit. It's noted that if you don’t have a re-entry permit, your visa and work permit will automatically cancel when you exit the country. While it is advisable to formally cancel your extension and work permit before leaving to avoid future fines, it is not mandatory if you don't plan to return. If you test positive for COVID-19 the day before departure, you should not go to immigration but can obtain a medical extension through the hospital you would quarantine in. You may want to have a representative go on your behalf to handle immigration issues.

I doubt you're on a visa but rather an extension of stay. You should cancel both that and your work permit. You should ask your school for a document giving your last day of work (matching the date you're flying out) and use that to cancel in advance of you leaving

You don't HAVE to cancel your extension to leave, but you should. If you leave without cancelling your extension and ever try to get a long term extension again in the future, you'll be charged 20,000₿ overstay fine which is the maximum fine because you never cancelled it. If you don't ever plan on getting another long term extension then it's fine to disregard.

Also if you test positive YOU cannot go to immigration as you're Covid positive. You can have someone go for you with documentation from the doctor or hospital explaining that you're Covid positive and isolating for 10 days and have them apply for you.

that is not true. There is no overstay if you leave the country without cancelling your extension. Again, that is not true at all.

you can and will be fined for overstay if you leave without cancelling your ED or Non-B extensions.

Interesting. Maybe a dumb question, but my passport is full so I will get a new one when I leave. Do they just look at the physical passport or is there an online record of all visas received in Thailand? Either way I will cancel everything before I leave so I don’t have any future issues.

As long as you do not have a re-entry permit, your visa and your work permit cancel as soon as immigration stamps you out. They don't stop you from leaving.

As far as testing positive, the hospital you check into for quarantine will help you with your extension, as it will fall under a medical extension, not a covid extension. If you test positive do not go to immigration, or anywhere else for that matter, except into quarantine.
