An update that may help some people.

I did not met the new requirements for application of an extension against my OA visa.

As a New Zealander i decided to do my application for a new OA visa in Australia.

I had the advantage of previous living there and a AU bank account.

Arrived Perth, next day went to Post Office, completed Police certificate request, cost 54.30, this took 5 days to arrive at my stated address, (friends place).

Same time had passport photos taken, need three for visa application.

Next day went to medical centre for medical certificate, completed, note this can take a full day as you need to go to different places for different tests. Then go back to the doctor after 4 days to pick up certificate.

Printed bank statement showing sufficient funds.

Completed forms off Thai embassy website, three pages.

Went to “Notary Public” (lawyer) where 2 copies and original set were notarized, cost 150.

Courier all documents with passport and return courier envelop to Thai embassy, cost 275, arrived next day, embassy process took 3 working days, courier back 4 days due to weekend.

Total process time from arrival and back to Thailand took 2 weeks however return ticket date was a bit tight.

As a NZ’er the process using the AU Thai embassy was very simple, what i cant clarifiy is can you use another country bank statement, ie NZ bank.

Doing this means i only need living expenses here, not the full funds in baht. It also means there is no minimum funds kept, nor any maturity time for funds in the bank. And i will get almost 2 years from this visa without any concerns before i have to repeat the process. At the moment there is no consideration for medical insurance, but i have that in place anyway.

The person detailed the steps taken, including obtaining a police certificate, medical certificate, required passport photos, and notarized documents. They highlighted that the application process at the Thai embassy in Australia was straightforward, and noted the advantage of not needing to keep large funds in a Thai bank account. Comments from others followed, discussing the pros and cons of applying for a new visa versus an extension and sharing experiences with different Thai consulates.

I applied for a new A-O during my trip back to NYC, at the Thai embassy. Despite having more than

month pension ( and certified bank statements to prove it) I was denied because I didn’t have

a month on the Thai Embassy website I was told “boss says no.” They gave me a six month tourist visa. Not sure what to do when the six months are up

J Samuel Decker they take walk-ins at LA. Submit first day morning...pick up afternoon next day. Or by mail 10 business days. Get your medical certificate in Thailand. LA accepts them.

I strongly suggest you use the Los Angeles Thai Consulate. I got mine from them last November. Friendly and helpful staff. I live in OK.....tip : choose a friendlier Consulate.

There are 4 consulates that can issue O-A visas in the US.

This is the list in order of being user friendly; Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Washington DC.

I'd look at the requirements for the consulate in LA.

Were your funds in a Thai bank or australia?

By getting a new OA in Australia you don't need to have your funds tied up, as is required in Thailand (I believe just long enough to get a bank statement).

@Brian *****
at the moment aus$ is so low, would rather go to Laos or hcm and slot quicker and cheaper

You still think you would apply for a new O-A visa rather than an extension? You have plenty of time to meet the requirements for an extension.

Thanks. Many people share the same perspective as you.

, yes i would reapply for a visa as i dont need or want to tie the 800k/400k of funds in a Thai bank and i dont need the monthly 65k to live on. I just find it simplier and less bank fees to move enough to live on every quarter.

James Miller Knowing the difference between the two I would prefer to get an extension. Everyone has their reasons for what they prefer though

@James *******
or get an extension

@Marty ********
and in that case, return to home country and repeat the O-A
Marty *********
James Miller Yes but what is opinion about next time around? He originally said he couldn’t meet the requirements for an extension
James ********
He already applied for and has received his new O-A

Thanx for the update. Right now a Non-O-A visa is definitely the way to go to get almost 2 years of trouble free stay in thailand

@Tod ********
, yes I know you can get 2 years on a non imm O/A with no hassles and even extend further or change to retirement with 800k baht etc in the bank down the track, I was just pointing out that there are a couple issues when dealing with Nong Khai imm as they will not issue a certificate of residence on a O/A acquired in Australia for yellow book or driving licence and please don’t tell me I am wrong because I spend a bit of discussing with them. Both are not necessary to live in Thailand so a non O/A visa will suit some but not others in Nong Khai.

@Lynn ********
and what does getting a driver's license or a yellow book have to do with getting an O-A visa?

I think it's more a "lost in translation" rather than anything to do with the visa you're on here as far as getting those. An O-A is a LONG STAY visa and you can get your 5 year license and a yellow house book on one

@Tod ********
it depends where you are if your in Nong Khai trying to get a driving licence or yellow book on a O/A forget it they now say nothing else for 12 months so it’s not quite trouble free
