TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, if you're stopped by police for driving without a valid driver license, you can expect to face a fine. The maximum fine allowed by law is 1,000 baht, but actual spot fines can vary from 200 to 400 baht depending on the police station and specific circumstances. It's noted that while some officers might demand a bribe, it's recommended to refuse and ask for a ticket instead, which you can pay at the police station within a week.
When I lived in Bankok the bribe was 300-500 baht, usually 300. In Pattaya the bribe is 500 to 1000 baht. If I am not in a hurry, and they ask for 1000, I tell them to give me the ticket.. The ticket is usually 400 to 500 baht and the inconvenience of going to pay.

Do you have any licence at all ? If so convert it go to the driving test centre they can help, if you don’t have any licence why would you be so disrespectful to Thailand ?
It’s true they don’t but it is there country not his and if he as a foreigner hurt or killed someone not only does every foreigner get a bad name he would be in serious trouble.
and you should mind your own business. big boys behind keyboards I can handle well. Bet you aren't that brave in real life are you ? 😂😂

300-500 bhat, usually 300 in isaan, 500 in chiang mai, paid 1000 before but that was on a car tax out, never pay more than 500 or ask to go to station/court.

Was 200 baht and went right into his pocket. Went the next day and got license, screw them
Dave *******
500 baht, If it goes in their pocket sometimes it doesn’t and they give you a receipt that you can use for the rest of the day. I’ve been asked for 1000 because half was going in their pocket and the other half to the station, told them don’t worry I don’t need a receipt just take the 500.

fine would only be around 500, but if you plan to do this, make sure you have your dash cam running always, because accidents are common here and the locals rarely admit fault. if it comes down to your word against their word, you are less likely to be believed if driving without a license.
Albert ***********
So stupid, if you will have accident, you will find your self in Bangkok "Hilton"
If you dont have a licence any insurance will be invalid and if you have an accident even if other persons fault, you will be responsible and could end up in jail, no licence - dont drive - it's that simple.
I agree with Garrett on this, it is not true. I experienced myself that for having an accident it is not important if you have al license or not if it is not your fault. If it is not your fault, you will only get the ususal fine. But they did not even ask for my license as it was clear to them it was not my fault.
it's more serious than that. If you don't have a license, any person with a license is entitled to kill you right there, on the street. No mercy. That's how this works.
if you believe is fake, go ahead and see if I am right or not if it happens?

Depends on the area. Once I get caught in Surasak. Got the ticket with 1000thb fine, when I went to the police station just paid 400thb.
Chester ********
the standard is 500bhat....however like everything here depends the situation and how the officer is.. I have known people to argue the 500 then the police pick at other things like having pillion pegs still out with no pillion and escalated the situation to 2000baht
brainless tripe like ‘in Colorado it’s an ARREST’ 😂 I could pick any of your delusional, Trumpian sense of superiority but your psychiatrist is better equipped to death with your narcissistic paranoia than I am. 🍻
the great thing is that when you encounter unconscionably stupid, vacuous, low IQ, useless pricks, online. U can simply block them... enjoy the window licking dipshit
Well, then you don't understand the law - which is a good thing. The PD in-car laptop can identify IF you actually have a valid license (but forgot to bring it along). Then, no arrest. But if U R NOT a licensed driver in the U.S. - well, U likely have some explaining to do to avoid arrest. Remember, most ( if not all U.S. police have a great deal of "discretion".
how dumb R. U ??? Or, is English your 2nd language? Maybe a seriously limited vocabulary or anger issues ( just a couple of possibilities) force you to use inappropriate wording.(BS) instead of engaging in intelligent discussion.
u must be struggling to grasp converation basics. Or ur just dumb as a rock. Let me guess... English is your only language 😂😂😂. Nobody gives a rat’s ass about Colorado. Or driving in the USA. Carry on with your day
Depends on how much the police officer demand for? Try ask him in good manner!

If you don’t have a license you are not covered with insurance. Not wise

A licence so easy to get especially Friday afternoons
Ivan ************
Come on, it's not necessarily that easy. Some immigration offices won't issue a certificate of residence (which is usually needed for a DL) if you haven't done a 90 day report for example. Catch 22.

Getting into an accident (or traffic violation) in any foreign country is a bad experience. Even if you were innocent, you will be guilty. No insurance will cover you. Depending where you are in Asia, it’s best to negotiate a deal with the policeman that stopped you and pay on the spot. Question: did you loose your drivers license, or did it expire, or you don’t have one?
And Michael and Makhulu it’s really not helpful to be this rude.
I had a similar experience. On motorbike. Car pulled out in front of traffic (moving about 50 km/h), car in front of me braked hard, I clipped their rear bumper and side fender and ended up in a ditch next to the car that pulled out, and had stopped, with just a few scratches. Police witnessed the whole thing. Was prepared for the worse. After talking with both drivers....they asked where I lived and was I ok. They said the two car insurances would take care of the damage, "no pay". Not sure what would have transpired if police were not there. Miracles do happen.
International driving permit is permitted for use in Thailand. Some people live here though and have a Thai driving license. If you don't have a license from your home country, it's difficult to get a Thai license.
Make sure to get a motorcycle endorsement on your US license if you don't have one already. With the IDP from AAA, go to any land transport office in Thailand. It takes about an hour, cost less than 300 baht, and you've got one for 2 years.

International license is fine for “short stay”. I had to pay a small parking fine when here on visa exempt, “tourist”, and my international license acquired in the US was no problem. For those with long stay visas, Thai license recommended.

No insurance will cover you or your victims. No hospital will admit you if you can't pay.
Stupid decision.
Is there a reason you don't have a licence? ,ponder that question instead.

Simon Baumann if you bothered to check
He has edited the post after my comment.
Yes I can read.
And no. I don't want him driving on any road near me or my friends without a licence.
Any hospital will provide emergency care, just like most anywhere in the world, regardless of your ability to pay. It's a law, a hospital CANNOT refuse care.
I was in hospital for two months after an accident here. There was no talk of money until I was totally fixed and discharged. Other than the surgeon looking after my case told me to not worry about it until they had fixed me up 100%.
400 max anywhere. Some idiots here want give there money away up to them. Biggest fine for driving here is if your vehicle is too loud. 1000. Jumping a red light half that. But can hit you for other things to bump up price.
Ken ***********
At present, driving without a licence carries a maximum penalty of 1,000 baht and/or one month in jail. Motorists face a maximum fine of 2,000 baht if they drive when their licence has expired, been seized or withdrawn from use
I'm hearing if your licence has expired it is still valid for up to 3 months after the expiry date. I have not had this confirmed.

Whatever you say Michael and once again it’s fuck not fuk you illiterate pos
Maximum fine allowed by law is 1000 baht. Spot fine varies by police station from 200-400 baht. If they request more money say no, you want the ticket. You have 7 days to go pay it at the police station.
Note: The law prior to last year authorized the police to hold a license until you went to the police station and paid the fine. An amendment was past in 2019 prohibiting that anymore, however most reports I've seen indicate police will still hold your license or ID card until the fine is paid.
