Did I miss some news about visa exempt arrivals? A friend arrived to Thailand from the US in late December and was stamped in for 90 days. I thought you only received 60 days now and could go to immigration to extend it another 30 days.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is confused about recent changes regarding visa-exempt arrivals in Thailand, noting that a friend from the US received a 90-day stamp instead of the expected 60 days. Other commenters clarify that citizens from specific countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and South Korea) are eligible for a 90-day stamp, while US travelers typically receive a 60-day stamp with the possibility to extend by 30 days. They advise that if the friend is not from a qualifying country, they should visit immigration to have their stamp corrected.

Perhaps your friend has a passport from the 5 visa waiver countries that would get 90 days stay? Or, perhaps they already had a Thai E-Visa from a Thai Embassy/Consulate?
Unless they're from one of the FIVE countries that get in on a 90 day visa waiver stamp; Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru or South Korea) there is no "free stamp" entry of 90 days
SO if your friend isn't from one of those 5 countries and were stamped in for 90 days they got "bad stamped" ๐ฎ
They need to go the nearest immigration office OR back to the airport they flew in at and get the stamp corrected.
They cannot stay the length of that stamp (it is the responsibility of the passport holder to make sure they're stamped in right)
