Did I miss some news about visa exempt arrivals? A friend arrived to Thailand from the US in late December and was stamped in for 90 days. I thought you only received 60 days now and could go to immigration to extend it another 30 days.

TLDR : Answer Summary
There seems to be confusion regarding the visa exemptions for arrivals in Thailand, especially concerning the duration of stay. Normally, travelers from the US only receive a 60-day stamp upon arrival, which can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office. However, some countries are eligible for a 90-day stamp upon arrival. According to community comments, if your friend's passport is from one of the five countries that receive a 90-day visa waiver (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, or South Korea), they may be correctly stamped. If they are not from one of these countries and received a 90-day stamp, it may be a mistake, and they should get it corrected at an immigration office.

Perhaps your friend has a passport from the 5 visa waiver countries that would get 90 days stay? Or, perhaps they already had a Thai E-Visa from a Thai Embassy/Consulate?

So simple, to check your stamp as you go through immigration. Yet people still don't check. Might this be a lesson to all.

Unless they're from one of the FIVE countries that get in on a 90 day visa waiver stamp; Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru or South Korea) there is no "free stamp" entry of 90 days

SO if your friend isn't from one of those 5 countries and were stamped in for 90 days they got "bad stamped" ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

They need to go the nearest immigration office OR back to the airport they flew in at and get the stamp corrected.

They cannot stay the length of that stamp (it is the responsibility of the passport holder to make sure they're stamped in right)
