Hypothetically, what would be the cheapest way for someone residing in Bangkok to get their 180 day re-entry stamp?

I was planning a short trip over to Da Nang but flights and accomodation etc are costing more than I had anticipated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍
Answer summary
The conversation discusses several budget-friendly options for obtaining a 180-day re-entry stamp for expats in Bangkok. Suggestions range from crossing into neighboring countries like Laos by train or bus to performing a border bounce at land crossings such as Padang Besar or Nong Khai. Some commenters advised taking overnight trains or buses to minimize accommodation costs, while others mentioned that direct flights to nearby cities could also be economical, depending on travel plans. The viability and legality of these options can vary, especially with considerations like visa costs and re-entry regulations.

Border bounce. Go to any land border, walk out and walk back in. With a visa there's no need to spend any time outside the country.

Lol isn’t a round trip flight just like 6k? And hotels are dirt cheap over there anyways

Fly to Hat Yai and take a minivan to Penang and then either fly directly from Penang to Bangkok or back to Hat Yai again and then fly back to Bangkok from Hat Yai. Or if you want to do it even cheaper, take the train or bus to Hat Yai. I wouldn't want that long journey though.

Several ways to do this. Drive yourself to Rayong boat to Myanmar return same day have a couple if beers in casino,drive to malaysian border same as above,sleeper train to Vientiane you get out at border stamp out and in then turn around come back train is more comfortable than bus get a sleeper. Flights again Vientiane is a cheap option hotel cheap have a feed and few beers fly back next day. Really you know you must do this every 6 months so you should plan it also if you dont have money WTF this is why immagration is starting to tighten things people like you who dony have funds but borrow to get the visa. Anyway good luck

Participant anonyme 952 that’s what I do, but bike touring isn’t exactly appealing for most people for a host of reasons, but primarily the physical effort it takes. But yes, I wouldn’t do it any other way.

Take the night bus from Bangkok to Mukdahan. Cross over into Laos at Savanaket, then cross back into Thailand, and catch the next bus back to Bangkok. That is the cheapest way.

if you intend to actually stay somewhere for a few days vietnam is still the most cost-effective i would say. If you are really *that* cheap do not stay in hcmc or da nang as they are both gentrified and expensive in terms of accommodation. But even those can be extremely cheap if you just stay outside of the gentrified areas. Or fly to less crowded destinations like Quy Nhon / Nha Trang. You still save money on things like food and eating out and beer, just about everything is cheaper in Vietnam than Thailand.

'Very easy and straightforward' to get DTV extensions in Bangkok according to this post. However, it is by an anonymous participant. That shouldn't pose any problem for someone like yourself with your Facebook burner profile.

If budget is the priority, many people use overnight trains or buses toward Nong Khai then cross into Laos from there. Flights are faster, but usually cost more depending on the season.

not cheaper once you factor in visa costs in laos

Anonymous participant 652 True, once you include Laos visa fees + transport on both sides, the savings can shrink fast.

Some people still do it mainly because overnight train/bus routes can reduce accommodation costs compared to flying somewhere farther like Vietnam or Malaysia. But it really depends on the person’s visa situation, timing, and how flexible they are with comfort/travel time.

Hypothetically, the cheapest way would be to walk to the closest land border while fasting. Only cost would be water - as you would not survive without it.

Slightly more realistic cheapest way would likely be to take the train in fan / 3rd class to Padang Besar (for just a few 100 THB) and walk back and forth across the border there.

But I would really just pay quite a few more dimes and enjoy a few days trip somewhere.

But more expensive, as you would need a visa for Laos. The OP wanted the cheapest way. 😅

The same day reentry was allowed IF YOU HAVE A MULTIPLE ENTRY VISA. If you are on visa exemption they would explicitly tell you that you cannot get back the same day or get back at all depending on how many times you have used the exemption before. This was in April this year

OK I'll stop keeping the secret but sometimes the train crossing right next to it will allow you back in the same day

It was a response mostly intended as a joke. But should be fine on a multiple entry visa. What would your suggestion to the OP be?

very little ever changes in Thai immigration law as written. It's all down to implementation details which change without written legal changes.

The no same day return was policy at that border for years. It subsequently became policy at the Laos border. It was applied to visa exempt entries, but not entries on multiple entry visas.

What's "official"? Passed through parliament and published in the Royal Gazette? No this wasn't that. But little is. That doesn't mean it wasn't the reality.

They don't stamp you denied entry in this circumstance, that's done at airports. Not land borders. They just send you back and the other side cancels your exit stamp.

@Ivan ***********
I am quite sure it was no official policy.

I asked for a reason why I did not get in, and IO simply told me "we don't do this at this border crossing".

When it was official policy I expect het would have said so.

Later someone told me that officially they should have put a stamp in my passport specifying why I was denied entry, but I got no stamp at all from Thai immigration.

@Lu**
right but this was a specific policy at that border specifically regarding visa exempt entries. I know because I was denied same day return there myself. But I don't think this ever applied to entry on a visa.

This has happened at other borders as well, such as Laos, they started requiring 1 or 2 nights in Laos before they'd stamp you back in on a visa exempt. But this didn't apply to DTV or other visas.

I am quite sure that not offering money was the problem, we arranged a transfer to the next Sadao border crossing and got stamped in there.
Luit *****************

@Ivan ***********
There is no law against same day return for specific types of visa.

It is up to decide IO if they think you do not comply with rules, and it is well known especially some land border crossings generate their own rules.

Not offering tea money might have been the problem.

Thanks Ivan. I have had an exit stamp cancelled myself after I had been stamped out an airport only to find my flight had already departed. The flight information screens were displaying incorrect departure time. I suspect if I had been in that same situation at Padang Besar my wife would have immediately put money in an envelope and we would have been stamped back in.

@Chris******
this does happen with visa exempt at that border, I had the same experience many years ago. What happens in this case is you are sent back from the Thai border to Malaysia, and Malaysian immigration cancels your exit stamp from Malaysia, so it's the same as if you never left Malaysia. You then spend one night in Malaysia, and next day Thailand will stamp you in (presumably now subject to the issues with restrictions on border runs).

This is as far as I am aware specific to visa exempt entries, it may not apply to reentry with a multi entry visa.

Historically, visa run companies paid tea money to immigration to facilitate same day return. This was supposedly stopped at one point, but it was well known enough it was covered in the Bangkok Post and other national newspapers.
Ivan ************
Ivan ************
@Lu**
that's visa exempt, it's still a border bounce if you left and expected to come back same day on a visa exempt. Doesn't matter if you had "time left" or not, your previous entry is extinguished when you leave.

The rules applied are different for multi entry visas. Probably would have been fine if you had a reentry permit on an extension either.

Historically at that border they wanted tea money to let you back same day.

Delightful trick to play on someone. Thailand stamped you out, Malaysia stamped you in. Malaysia stamped you out then Thailand wouldn't stamp you back in? What did you do?
Luit *****************

@Frank-Steven **********
I was refused to get back in Thailand at Pedang Besar after shopping on visa exemption, but it was not a border bounce, still a lot om time left, but IO said we do not do same day return at this border crossing.

Cheapest way for OP might be to do in country extension, but when you not even have the money for a cheap flight out of the country I am wondering what you are doing to travele to Thailand.

Perhaps you could fly to Krabi or Surat Thani, rent a car for one day, and cross over the southern boarder to Malaysia. All in the same day. Or take an overnight bus from Bangkok to Surat Thani/Krabi, even cheaper.
