Can DTV visa holders successfully open a Thai bank account?

Mar 17, 2025
Has anyone had success opening a Thai bank account recently with DTV?

Scrolling through the threads but can't seem to find any recent success stories.

I also read agents are no longer assisting DTV holders in opening accounts. Is the the case? If not, does anyone have any agent recommendations?

I'm happy to deposit 500k+ baht to open the account.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post inquires about the possibility of opening a bank account in Thailand with a DTV visa, noting concerns about recent restrictions and the availability of agent assistance. Responses indicate that opening an account solely on a DTV is challenging due to stricter banking rules, though some suggest strategies for success and mention specific banks like TTB which have had positive reports. Recommendations include direct attempts at multiple branches without necessarily relying on agents.

Absolutely no need to use an agent to open a bank account. You just have to keep trying your luck and eventually there will be a branch that’ll allow you to open one. This has always been the case in Thailand on tourist visas and visa exemptions.

Tell them you are buying properry. The 500k is the first tranche and you will transfer millions to buy the property. That should help :)

paperwork from the real estate company is needed in such cases.

If every one can walk in and tell that story

It would be so easy 😃

You will see some recent comments about people being successful at TTB.

Lots of rules for banks due to a crackdown on scams. The government now holds banks and telecoms responsible for them, so your chances of being able to open one solely on a DTV are quite small. The more proof of a long, serious stay here, the better.

You cannot open a bank account on a DTV.

It is Thais opening "Mule" accounts that is at the heart of the crackdown :-)

Maybe yes and maybe no. I’m not told like that by bank staff somehow.

I am sure front line bank staff are not asked for their input on bank strategy, policy or guidelines :-)

not in Pattaya anyway and that information I got from my agency and they know the law better than you. Banking rules have changed over the last 6 or so months.

why agent know better that's rubbish. They can't open it now because they are the ones not secure enough opening for money laundering. You can open an account you just need correct paperwork. Including a letter from you phone company identifying you and your phone number, copy of passport, visa and stamp, letter of house registration from immagration or yellow house book, tax id if you have one. The bank will do it. It has become more strict because of government crackdown on money laundering scams now operating in Thailand. But it is possible on DTV. I have bkk bank and krungthai bank accounts and pay with the app on phone
