Some advice for those visiting Vientiane for a visa and have read guides saying it's ok to turn up at 8am - at 7:15am this morning the queue was already ~200 people long and by the time we were let into the compound itself about 7:40 to wait would have been been pushing 400.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Visitors to the Thai consulate in Vientiane should arrive early as queues can be very long, evidenced by a recent experience where over 400 people were waiting by 7:40am. It's advisable to avoid visiting on Mondays and Thursdays due to high traffic from visa run companies. Alternative strategies include arriving later in the day, such as around 10:15am, to minimize wait times. Some recommend spreading visits out to Fridays to pick up visas on Mondays with shorter processing times.

as long you just stay a few days each time you will not have a problem. You can always show the return ticket, hotel booking and money. They pull you out if they see you max every 30day entry stamp.

Cheers Tod - one other question - I'm likely to be flying in and out of Thailand fairly regularly for job interviews in the coming weeks - would you recommend getting a tourist visa and then getting a re-entry permit each time or just continue visa exempt each time and not bother getting a visa?

@Ad**
, no problems at all with Savannakhet if you have what they want

Hey Tod as long as you have the 3 proof-of's at Savannakhet all should be fine right? This would be my 2nd consecutive tourist visa (last one was from Saigon).

I think he means it's less busy Tod

Savannakhet isn't ANY quicker because it runs on the same time line that Vientiane does.

You turn in your passport one morning pick it up the next afternoon. I grant you though, it might not be as busy as Vientiane.

Unfortunately it is far harder to get a tourist visa in Savannakhet seeing as they're asking for the 3-proof-ofz:

-proof of onward travel within 60 days

-proof of hotel booking

-proof of 20K baht

I've filmed a full instructional on the CM > Udon Thani > Vientiane visa process and will post in the next few weeks. I followed

advice and we showed up at 10.15am and there was 5 people there. Aint no rush. They have hours of operation for a reason :)

It's a Monday! Don't stress. They will get everyone processed. If you don't want to wait go on a Friday and pickup Monday afternoon. 5 minutes tops to do both, but you have to spend a weekend in hell.

The two WORST days to hit the thai consulate in Vientiane are Mondays and Thursdays because of the visa run companies which lug people there.

Also if you show up around 9:30-10 most of the herd of foreigners is gone and you can walk right up to turn in your paperwork with very little waiting.
