I'm currently living in Canada. Seriously looking at moving to Pattaya. Just wondering if anybody can give me some advice on what I should get for long-term stay.
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the potential move to Pattaya, with many users cautioning the poster against settling there based on their experiences. They suggest exploring other parts of Thailand such as Hua Hin, Cha-Am, or Chiang Mai, emphasizing the importance of visiting first and understanding local conditions. Key considerations for a long-term stay include selecting the right visa (like a retirement or long-term tourist visa), ensuring sufficient finances, and having health insurance. Various opinions highlight that Pattaya has changed significantly over the years and may not offer the desired lifestyle for everyone.

Hell nah, biggest mistake.

Why Pattaya? And if this guy says, well the beaches, weather, relaxing environment wa wa wa.

He’s actually been feed fairytales. He’s going there to party, sit in the bars meet girls fall in love and get his savings drained.

Go there for 10 days, explore and if you can survive without sending money to some random and video calling every night then you can work on actually considering.

Never be exposed to Pattaya and going there head first is not the smartest move.

Half the people living in Pattaya won’t even mention retirement, the beaches, bars or all that nonsense.

The ones that do are the ones that’s not living but struggling to survive.

If you are above 50 years old, can obtain a retirement visa where you need to have a bank balance of THB 800,000 (CAD 33,800 apx) with visa fees about THB 1900 (CAD 80).

Pattaya was awesome…30 years ago. It’s a shit show now. I decided to give it a look again last December for the first time since 2002. I spent about 30 minutes in Pattaya. My hotel was full of about 5 billion Indians apparently sleeping about 20 to a room. I left even though my room was paid for 4 days and went to Jomtien and hung out over there for a few days and then went to Hua Hin. Pattaya had just gone to hell.

Have you been to Thailand before? Depending on where you go in Thailand what you will experience is completely different. If you want a crazy zoo and living in Mumbai you’ll love Pattaya. You may want to brush up on Hindi and Russian.

You can rent a condo further out from central or jomtien for a few hundred a month. I would suggest not rushing into signing a lease and try out living there. See how you like the commute to places you like to go often. Health insurance as a few folks mentioned is a good idea. It’s better to stay in an area where there’s others tourists/foreigners or at least it might help you feel more comfortable for starters. Look into long term car rentals too. Parking and getting around isn’t as quick with it as a motorbike but much safer.

You definitely don’t provide enough information.

What’s your age?

What visa will you get?

Do you plan on working? If so, good luck.

Get a good tax attorney in Thailand since money brought in may be taxed but the tax forms aren’t set up to disclose the funds that aren’t taxed, and you are responsible for taxes if you live there more than 6 months a year.

Do you plan on driving, if so an international driving permit.

As a fellow Canadian who has lived here for about 9 out of the last 20 years, many in Pattaya, dont move to Pattaya. It has turned into a cesspool filled with Indians, Russians and now French Arabs who are destroying the place. Plus they just arrested a CHinese man the other day with an aresenol of guns, grenades and C4 who was planning on carrying out a terrorist attack. Not sure what lifestyle you are looking for, but Id suggest moving upcountry or to the islands down South. But not Koh Phangan, it has been taken over by Israelis. And not Phuket, it has been over run by Russians.

As for what you need to get for long term. If you are over 50, just get a retirement visa. As for what to bring, you can pretty much get everything over here with the exception of good deodorant. I use Old Spice and have to get my mom to mail me some over once in a while. If you plan to drive, get an international drivers license before you come. It will save you the headache of going through their licensing process here. You can just show them the international license and they will give you a Thai one.

No worries. If you dont really like the partying scene, then Pattaya isnt the place to be. I was working there it it suited that purpose. Now I moved up country I'm so much happier. I'd check out Chiang Mai then. I visited there about three years ago and absolutely fell in love with the place. Or if you want to be in the South near the Islands, Krabi is the place to be.

Pattaya is a cesspool, everything you pay for is higher priced, you’ll be seen as a walking ATM. I would move to a mid-level city and take a Thai language course at a school to keep yourself busy and also to be able to communicate. Retirement can be quite boring, especially if you are single when that happens , you start spending your money foolishly to cure boredom. If you have never been to Thailand, I would suggest traveling around the country first and not just the tourist areas. Then you will understand real Thailand. How do I know because I visit family every year there. Rent a car for a month with FULL insurance and explore . What you see on YouTube and Facebook only shows the positive side of things. Always take it with a grain of salt. Most Thai’s struggle financially like in Canada. What you have in Canada is clean air and seasons , in Thailand it is only hot and hotter with high humidity. You’ll be forever sticky and probably itchy with mosquito bites because you are fresh meat . So far my favorite city is not the major cities, but I like Nakhon Ratchasima. Large and clean with good infrastructure and inexpensive. Very large with at least 32 districts and very livable for a expat. It will never be a touristy city as it has no international airport, which is probably a good thing. I used to want to retire in Thailand with my wife who is from a small city in Thailand, but having second thoughts now and maybe only part-time retirement in Thailand .You will definitely need a decent income to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle at least $3000 Canadian for a single person after taxes and $5000 for a couple. While you see that people live on a lot less on YouTube I don’t think that would be the reality. You will base Canadian standards of living a lot when you are there. Unless you don’t mind eating out at small little hut restaurants with no air-conditioning and buying food at stalls to take back to your home with no air-conditioning then maybe you can survive on less but the reality is you’ll want to have comfort in Thailand, as you were not born into that type of lifestyle.

Best of luck.

Here is a dark history in Thailand, becareful and vigilants. Its no longer a good place for family vacation.

August 2000 – Ms. Jones, 23, died in Thailand.

17 March 2002 – The International Secretariat was informed by the Asian Human Rights Commission of the rape of a 20-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl by Thai soldiers.

New Year 2006 – Katherine Horton, 21, was murdered on a beach in Thailand.

2013 – A man in Bangkok who raped and killed a six-year-old girl admitted to 10 other child murders.

2014 (15 September) – The Koh Tao murders: British tourists Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were found dead on Sairee Beach.

2019 – German national Miriam Beelte, 26, was found dead on Koh Sichang island.

Around 2022 – A 26-year-old Myanmar migrant woman was murdered.

Approximately 2022 (4 years ago) – A Swiss female tourist was found murdered in Phuket, believed to have been sexually assaulted; the body of a missing Thai man was also discovered.

2025 – Reports of Thai military personnel allegedly gang-raping Cambodian women along the border.

2026 (recent) – A woman in Thailand was strangled to death while resisting rape; the suspect reportedly pretended to be a police witness.

There are thousands and thousands more unreported sexual assault and murder were unreported.

Crime in Thailand is not low. I lived there for five years, and in my experience, it is not a good place to raise a family or even for a family vacation. I’ve seen a lot during my time there. I’m glad to have left Thailand, and I do not plan to return.

Specific incident data: A report from March 2026 indicated approximately 2,300 cases involving assault, attempted murder, and rape. These are only a few examples from 2026, and anyone can conduct further research. I am speaking from my own perspective, without bias.

January 2026: British tourist Joshua Kershaw, 21, was found dead in a Bangkok hotel room after being reported missing. Police investigated the case as a possible criminal act.

February 2026: Australian tourist Alan Jolof died in Phuket following a road rage incident in which he was allegedly struck in the neck by a gang-linked attacker.

February–March 2026: Chinese tourist Ji Cherngchao, 34, disappeared in Pattaya on February 23 and was later found dead in a canal in Ratchaburi. A suspect was charged with detention leading to death.

April 2026: Two tourists — a 30-year-old South African man and a 38-year-old Latvian man — were found dead in a Bangkok hotel near Khao San Road. Police reported no signs of a struggle, although white powder was found at the scene.

In March 2026, seven novice monks in Bangkok, Thailand, alleged sexual abuse by two former senior monks. The suspects, both aged 24, were arrested by anti-human trafficking police after being accused of luring victims with cash and smartphones. Authorities reportedly discovered more than 100 explicit videos and alcohol in the temple quarters.

According to the Bangkok Post on March 20, 2014, there was reportedly one rape every 15 minutes in Thailand. More than 31,000 girls and women were reportedly raped that year, with approximately 60% of the victims being university students or school pupils. Alcohol and drug use were identified as major contributing factors in many sexual assault cases.

In February 2026, a taxi driver was arrested for allegedly raping a university student.

There are many additional cases that go unreported

Do you HAVE enough money to ACTUALLY live in Thailand or will you be living on the skinniest of budgets that barely allows you a meal a day and a beer a week ?

All kinds of different settings to suit an individual's lifestyle. You will see many suggestions.

Everyone is assuming that you haven't been here before. So, my question is, have you been to Thailand, is this a learned though experience decision? Have you been anywhere else in Thailand?

I chose to live in Na Jomtien for its price point and proximity to the beach. Jomiten is technically part of Pattaya, but feels entirely different. That said, I've been here a year, and considering a move to Kata, or Karon. I'm actually kicking the tires on the outskirts of Bangkok this weekend.

If you're looking to live in a town that is literally the tourist sex capital of Thailand then Pattaya is your place... If you like to see a lot of older guys chasing young women, if it's your thing is to go out at night and seeing hundreds of freelancers on the beach looking for work, if you like walking down some of the streets and having Bar girls solicit you for attention, if you like some of the worst street food in Thailand. if you like overcrowded bars with really cheesy bands playing subpar music, if you like to go to a lot of tourist trap restaurants with some of the worst food in Thailand, then by all means move to Pattaya... if not, I could think of a hundred different places in Thailand with better culture, better food, better people, better beaches or landscapes.

I can't imagine deciding to move to the other side of the world if you've never been.

Thailand is amazing, but you should really get yourself a 60 day tourist visa and come spend at least a week each in a few different cities. While you travel, really think about what it would be like to live there and scope out things like neighborhoods, grocery/market options/transit etc.

And do a little research on visa options outside of just a FB group.

No one can give you much advice on that front without knowing your age, financial status, work status, etc. but there are a lot of different options depending on if you have remote work or are retired etc.
