I'm confused. I saw a post on here saying US citizens need to "apply" for a tourist visa when traveling from Vietnam to Thailand? I thought we had visa on arrival?

TLDR : Answer Summary
US citizens traveling from Vietnam to Thailand do not need to apply for a tourist visa. Instead, they are granted a visa exemption that allows for a 30-day stay in Thailand upon arrival, which can be extended for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office. The confusion often arises from the term 'visa on arrival', which does not apply to US passport holders. This term refers to nationals who must pay for a visa upon arrival in Thailand, but US travelers are not included in this category.

this is the official site for VNese evisa. 25 for 30 days, $50. for 90 multiple entry. Go for the 90 days to give yourself some latitude. As you fill o ut the form, double and triple check the date for entry and exit...sometimes they change on their own....it's weird....You'll love it here....inexpensive, great food, great people, great beaches.

.. Thank you. Is this an evisa...is this visa on arrival?

evisa - visa on arrival not available unless you use an agent to obtain it for you at a much higher cost.

You need a tourist visa only if you are planning to stay in Thailand more than 60 days (60 day visa + 1 30 day extension allowed = up to 90 days).

With US passport, travelling to Thailand without any Visa = you are granted a visa exemption permit of stay of 30 days (1 30 days extension also allowed = up to 60 days).

It depends on how long you intend staying in Thailand.

You get a visa exemption on entry that allows you to stay up to 30 days.

Vietnam should keep the US out

You need a visa for Vietnam, not Thailand. Just come with your US passport and they’ll let you in for 30 days (and can get a 30 day extension).

Are you sure I can just get a 30 day stamp for tourism on arrival in Vietnam? I thought I had to apply for even a 30 day stay.

@Kwong ****
that’s not what I said. You absolutely need a visa BEFORE you fly to vietnam. They will not let you on the airplane without it.

Tourist 30 days I think 🤔

Might be wrong

US passport holders can enter Thailand with no visa for a 30 day stay. This can be extended once at a local immigration office for a further 30 days for 1,900 baht.

Visa on Arrival is a term that is often misquoted. It’s not for US passport holders. It’s for nationals that have to buy a visa before entering for 2,000 baht and they are stamped in for 15 days.

You don’t have visa on arrival, but you have a 30 days visa exemption, which is a free stamp upon entry. Tourist visa gives you 60 days. Both can be extended with additional 30 days at your local immigration.

I see... so we CAN apply for a 60 day tourist visa on their website? Instead of the visa exempt for 30 days?

@Kwong ****
depends on where you are. If you're in a country where the Thai embassy has adopted evisa, then you apply online through the evisa system. If you're in a country where the Thai embassy has not adopted evisa, then you follow the application guidelines of your local Thai embassy.

@Kwong ****
if you're in Vietnam then you have to apply at the embassy in person
Jan ******************
@Kwong ****
Yes, but Vietnam doesn’t use the e-visa system so you’ll need to apply in person at your nearest embassy/consulate.
Brandon ************
US citizens do not qualify for visa on arrival. That is where you apply and pay for a visa at the airport and get 15 days in Thailand.

US citizens can get Visa exempt which is a free 30 day stamp and is not a visa.

You probably saw a post saying that US citizens need a visa to enter Vietnam.
