I am a little confused about the visas/ extensions related to marriage to a Thai citizen. This confusion has to do with the requirement to leave the country every 90 days. Is that requirement for all marriage related visas/extensions, or for certain types or types obtained inside or outside Thailand? I am on a O-A retirement extension and may marry a Thai, but do not want more onerous requirements, especially having to leave the country every 90 days instead of a 90 day report.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The confusion around the visa requirements related to marriage to a Thai citizen involves understanding the difference between the Non-Immigrant O Visa and the Extension of Stay based on marriage. A Non-Immigrant O Visa allows for a 90-day stay with a requirement to report every 90 days, while the Extension of Stay grants a 1-year stay with the same 90-day reporting requirement. Marrying a Thai does not necessitate changing to a marriage visa if one wishes to maintain an existing retirement extension.

Got it..90 day border runs while within the 1 year visa period and then 90 day reports when on the Extension to Stay. Thanks guys! I’ll stick with my O-A extension, even if married, unless things get more onerous with any new O-A Retirement Extension to Stay requirements. Just want to understand my options so I can react rationally and correctly if necessary...

That's not quite true. For an O-A VISA ("the sticker") you are stamped in for an entire year - NOT 90 days.

As Robert explained, the 90 day border bounce is when you're within the validity of a multi entry visa, once you extend your permission to stay using a yearly extension you do 90 day reports within the country.

You don’t have to change your visa type just because you marry a Thai citizen

Two different things.

a 1 year Non Immigrant O visa based on marriage with Thai National, issued at a Thai Consulate gives you 90 days of stay inside Thailand,

an 1 year Extension of Stay based on marriage with a Thai National, issued at your local Immigration Office gives you 1 year of stay, with the extra requirement to report if you are 90 days inside Thailand,
