TLDR : Answer Summary
The process for hiring a non-Thai citizen as an intern in Thailand involves several considerations. People need to clarify whether the internship is paid or unpaid, and if the intern is currently studying at a Thai university or is outside Thailand. An unpaid intern may apply for an ED visa with the necessary university documentation, which allows visa extensions without a work permit. For paid internships, a Non-B visa and a work permit (WP) are required. Additionally, there are stipulations regarding the ratio of Thai to foreign employees in a workplace that employers must follow.
1. Employ the "intern" as a regular employee. The "intern" would acquire a one year extension of stay based on employment, and would follow the normal process.
2. If you want the "intern" to work as part of his studies, contact her or his university and ask them what the process would be.
I used to work for an internship agency. Interns can come on ED visas too, if they can get a letter from the university, stating they are students, internship position, period etc. Then they don't need WP and can extend the visa with the same letter. (This is what I remember, I wasn't responsible for visa).
Add: Ah! It needs to be unpaid internship. Paid internship requires Non-B and WP as stated above.
in that case...employer will have to hold a valid non b business visa/Thai tax ID #...and intern will need a non b visa too for business and a work permit.
Thanks. The intern will be paid and is currently located inside Thailand (but on a soon-expiring student visa as he just completed his studies). The internship is a real internship, not a workaround.
