TLDR : Answer Summary
The process for a British citizen marrying a Thai citizen and obtaining a marriage certificate involves several key steps. First, the British citizen must obtain an Affidavit of Freedom to Marry from the British Embassy, which requires making an appointment online. This affidavit needs to be translated into Thai and certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After these steps, the couple can register the marriage at the local Amphur office. It's suggested to ensure that translations accurately reflect the names, as these will become the legal spelling in Thai. The Thai partner does not need to accompany the British citizen to the embassy. Additional tips include choosing a translation service familiar with embassy procedures.

I heard of ban rak

Just a bit of trivia; In Bangkok most people register their marriage at the Amphur known as Bang Rak (district of love). It's so busy though that they only take so many people a day.

but when you get divorced in Bangkok people do that at Amphur Bang Jak (district of separation) :O ;)

If your still not sure pop into Translation express in Bangkok they do it for you

Once you get that affidavit of freedom to marry you take it and your passport to a translation service so they can translate it into thai AND go get the MFA certification stamp that it's an accurate translation. Most translation companies have an "all in" price where they translate them and get them stamped for you.

The BIG thing is make sure how ever they write your name in thai on those translations sounds something like your name, because that becomes the legal thai spelling of your name from then on ;)

A good brit friend of mine who's name is Sean" (pronounced as Shawn) has his thai name spelled as สี่น <-seen :O :(

Should my Thai partner come with me to the Embassy or can I go alone?

yeah that will save you a visit

It was pretty straight forward , I think I paid about 4K baht at embassy and a few hundred at chaeng wattana

@Jor***
, you go to the consulate to sign the statement in front of them that you're FREE to marry.

You don' t need to go there and get the form because it's a download on the link I provided..

Make an appointment online first and then when you get there explain to the girls what you want . They will give you a form to fill out which you basically state that you're single and have or have not been married before , it's pretty straight forward. You then make another appointment in which you take the completed form back , the same day you will get it notarised from the embassy. You then have to get it translated into thai , i went to the consular of foreign affairs at chaeng wattana for that .

So if I go to the Embassy, is that to declare I wish to marry ?

Okay, if I understand your question, you're asking about how you go about getting the paperwork to marry a thai citizen here in thailand as a brit.

I'll take a stab at it.

You get the affidavit of freedom to marry from here.

Then you get that document & your passport translated into thai, and certified as an accurate translation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Then you take those to your local Amphur and register the marriage
