TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the challenges faced by expats in Thailand regarding the necessity of re-certifying their UK Marriage certificates for visa extension purposes. One participant shares their experience of obtaining the necessary legalisation and certification through the Thai Embassy in London, highlighting the cost, duration, and frustration of repeating the process annually despite having the original certificate. The need for recertification is attributed to the complexities of being foreigners married in the UK and utilizing spousal visa arrangements.

Ah. I'm in a similar position as I have an Extension based on work, with my wife and child piggy-backing on it as my dependents. Getting our UK Marriage certificate legalised and certified was a pain as it can only be done in the UK and then by the Thai Embassy in London, costs £30 and £10 for the Thai Embassy abd takes around 3 weeks. My Extension is due for renewal in November and I had NOT anticipated having to go through the process every year! After all the legalisation is just to confirm it's a legal certificate and as I have the original, surely once is enough! Hopefully this is just one rogue office....

And grateful I do my Extensions in Bangkok not Chiang Mai!
, I think all the wanted was the person to go to the UK consulate here and get a notary letter where they state the marriage certificate is real.
The UK consulate won't certify marriage certificates (nor with the US consulate) so instead you just write a letter stating it's real and the consulate notarizes that ;)

As i remember he/she wrote that the original was handed in and now need a new one. Just hand in the copy and keep the original in your bag to show if needed.

Chiang Mai seems to be a law unto itself. If I were the OP, I'd try taking it higher up for another decision. I wonder if they know it has to be done in the UK and not at the British Embassy in Bangkok. Shame she deleted her thread.

I have not heard of that being a requirement in Bangkok. I believe the person in the other thread was doing theirs in Chiang Mai

I think the reason they needed it certified was because they were both foreigners married in the UK one on a retirement extension and one "piggy-backing" on it.
