ORIGINAL POSTER
I am seeing a lawyer this week on getting a residency permit. I have lived in Thailand for 30 years and have two sons born here but after 21 they are kicked out of the country. We have Dutch nationality. I hear from some it takes 9 months and from others it is basically impossible. Any comments on this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has lived in Thailand for 30 years and is seeking a residency permit while navigating the complexities of their children potentially losing residency at age 21. Comments highlight the challenges of dual citizenship, the requirements for obtaining Thai nationality for children born to a Thai parent, and the bureaucratic issues surrounding permanent residency applications in Thailand. There are mixed experiences regarding the duration and process of obtaining residency, with some stating it could take nine months while others describe it as nearly impossible.

How much does the non immigrant visa cost these days??
Tod *********
a single entry 90 day Non-Immigrant visa of any type is about 2000baht (no matter if you get it inside thailand at the immigration office OR from a thai consulate in another country)

You can't apply for Permanent Residency this year until the open the enrollment and its not been announced yet this year. GO out to Chaengwattana Immigration office and talk to the people who are in the permanent residence application section (they're not busy now seeing as they haven't started taking applications yet this year)..

another thing to do (so that YOU understand the process) is to read thru this long thread from the Thai Visa Forum. It's very long, but filled with good information that is still as accurate today as when it was written.

Thanks for the info. Saw your informative post about PR too. Let's hope this family can obtain their permanent residency as is the subject of the original post. Good luck to them.

Were they were born to a Thai Mother in Thailand? Are they registered in a Thai house certificate? If both the above are yes then they are entitled to Thai National status.

. Place of birth is irrelevant. As long as one parent is Thai, the child is automatically thai. Just some minor paperwork after birth to register it officially.

thanks for that info man. My child was born to a Thai mom in Thailand and has Thai nationality. But it’s good to know all the same.

when applying for Thai citizenship, I had to get a form from the UK embassy, stating that I would renounce my British citizenship on getting Thai citizenship. However, the consul told me that there was no need.

Technically, dual citizenship isn't allowed but it is a grey area in the Nationality Act. Naturalized citizens could get their Thai citizenship taken away if they are found to have used their former nationality in Thailand.

My mother is Thai but i didn't apply for a Thai citizen since i don't want to join the army.. someone told me long time ago that if i will apply for a dual citizenship i will time to choose to have just one citizen untill i turn 20 or 21? Not sure if this law is still valid tho... but my brother who has a dual citizenship just find out a couple years ago that his Thai citizen for some reason was forfeited.

As a Thai passport holder at 18 you would have been put into conscription and not serving notice would had been counted as AWOL

You are correct. If you move away and get a foreign passport then your thai one is forfeit. Try coming to thailand using you thai passport then leave using you other because you have no visa on your thai passport. The immigration will take your thai passport off you. Yes you can have a thailand passport again but you must forfeit your second nationality first. Just make sure you do not own land inbetween as I will become messiy as it was owned illegally as a foreigner.
